About Whitby & District Model Railway Club

A group of railway modellers who meet weekly in Sleights, on a Wednesday evening. We would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to join us!

Whitby & District Model Railway Club Description

The Whitby and District Model Railway Club was formed in 1988, by a group of railway modellers living in Whitby and the surrounding area.

The club meets each week at Church House in Sleights, on a Wednesday evening from 19: 30 to 22: 00.

Currently, the club has several layouts built to a range of gauges, including O and OO. We also have a number of members who work in N, HO, OO, EM, P4, O-14 and O.

The club meetings are informal, with members either using the club layouts, bringing their own projects to work on or just popping in for a social cup of tea! We have a wide membership base, with people regularly traveling from the Teesside, Scarborough and Pickering areas, as well as people more locally from the Whitby area.

Our current members have a wide variety of skills and interests, and regularly pass on these skills through helping those who are less experienced. We also usually have at least one ongoing club layout project, with all members encouraged to get involved.

The club would welcome new members and would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to join us.

An interesting night at the club last Wednesday with some American stock appearing as well as two EM gauge locos. Work also progresses slowly on the new O gauge layout with the track receiving its base coat of sleeper grime.

Don't forget, the first running night of our new O gauge layout is this Wednesday. New members are always welcome, we meet at Church House, 172 Coach Road, Sleights.
This will probably be the last chance to run Spital Bridge until July as in the next few weeks we will be painting and ballasting the track.

Solid progress tonight at the club with Spital Bridge, the basic shell of the signal box has been started by a members wife and interior fittings tried as well. The baseplate for the loading dock was also tried in place this evening to make sure it was the correct shape and the signal box shell was also placed in what will likely be its final position. Cosmetic fish plates have been added to board D and this board is now ready for the track to be painted in a few weeks time.
The layout itself will be running at the club on Wednesday 6th March from 19:30 at Church House, 172 Coach Road Sleights.

Work continues slowly but surely on Spital Bridge, Kevin was doing the incredibly precise job of fitting the aligning bolts to the fiddle yard tonight. These bolts are precisely fitted so when the panel on the left is moved the bolts are engaged so the two tracks line up with the layout - this enables us to put select which engine or train we will put out next, or run one off the layout into a spare siding. The bolts also supply power to the selected track meaning when you turn the controller only one train moves rather than everything in the fiddle yard!
Remember, its first official running night will be the 6th of March in Church House, Sleights. New members are always welcome.

A post from Kev showing the inside of the now totally wired control box for our new O gauge layout Spital Bridge. Kev has invested considerable time at home in this box, including producing a custom bridge rectifier for the point motor supply.
He has also tested it at home to make sure all of the outputs work correctly. The next step will be to spend a couple of Wednesday Sessions making sure the control box talks to the layout properly with a view to having the layout host the March club running night.
Don't forget tonight at Church House (172 Coach Road Sleights) is our first OO gauge running night of 2019 from 19:30.

A couple of photos of the clubs Christmas running night last night, as you can see a true running buffet was enjoyed by all.

A look at one of the more interesting projects going on at the club at the moment. Several members are engaged in building a P4 layout based in the industrial part of Middlesbrough, what is now Vulcan Street, which is the piece in the middle of the map that looks like a railway line running down the middle of a road. This should be an interesting project with very tight curves and hand made trackwork.
For more information on what P4 is, please visit

If this project or any of the other ongoing ones interest you - or you are local and have an interest in model railways, please feel free to pop along to a club night on a Wednesday at 19:30 in Church House, Sleights.
