Wild Instincts began as a university-led show, named ‘Tribal Instinct. ’ It brought in a large amount of public interest when the event was showcased on March the 28th 2011. The initial aim of the show was to give both university students and the general public an opportunity to experience East African culture.

As more people began to show an increasing interest in the event, we decided that all the show proceeds would go to a Kenyan orphanage based in Kisumu, called the ‘Ketwangi Orphanage’. The show was organised and facilitated by people from different walks of life and backgrounds; 12 committee members, over 30 models, 7 dancers, 15 members of a musical group called ‘The Honey Drummers’ and the lighting /DJ crew were only a portion of the people that were part of this unique event.

The interest in Tribal Instinct has continued to grow exponentially every year as it has become an annual
event where different societies and cultures come together. After seeing the potential of the show and the
amount of interest it attracted, a new concept, in line with the ethos of Tribal Instinct, emerged. This concept
is what is now known as Wild Instincts. The aim of Wild Instincts was to provide students from all backgrounds the opportunity to embark on an expedition to help the East African community on the ground. A total of 12 students partook in the first ever Wild Instincts expedition in Kenya, which lasted 31 days and 31 nights. The programme was primarily focused on community development, with the weekends being jam packed with a number of adventurous activities. Despite acting as an independent organisation, Wild Instincts’ roots and current networks still lie within the Leeds East African Society.

Wild Instincts is looking to expand as it sets itself up as a community driven enterprise here in the UK.

Wild Instincts runs four programmes, Wild In Kisumu (a community based programme), Wild In Tsavo (a conservation based programme), Wild In Africa (a cultural and adventure based programme) and Wild In Work (a placement based
programme). The first expedition that took place in 2011 took the form of the Wild In Kisumu project, as it was community orientated. However, this year we are also offering volunteers the option of the Wild In Tsavo programme.
