If you are looking to start a flock of chickens and are contemplating the best course of action it may be worthwhile understanding a little about the poultry breeding world. There are different types of keepers and breeders trying to produce different types of birds. Broadly speaking some are producing pure breeds for showing at poultry shows, some produce pure breeds for their utility ie. there ability to produce eggs or meat, some produce cross breeds from pure... breeds for utility and there are some larger businesses producing commercial hybrids to lay lots of eggs in a short time or meat birds which grow astonishingly fast. Commercial hybrids are very efficient egg layers but they will not live long because they take too much out of themselves in a short time. Hybrid egg layers are extremely inbred. Commercial meat birds grow so fast that they do not have muscles strong enough to support their fast growth. The alternative to the fast growing meat chickens can be found amongst the pure breeds of chickens but as well as finding the right meat breed such as Indian Game, you need to find the right strain of Indian Game which has not been bred for showing but has been bred to survive outdoors, being robust and producing a good carcass and being able to breed the next generation of it's own type without assistance. Pure breeds are produced for showing and utility. Again because a chicken is of a certain breed, it does not mean that they are all the same. A pure breeder can have different reasons for breeding the birds that he does. If the pure breeder wants chickens only to show, they may not be interested in egg production but a smallholder that wishes to preserve the breed and sell eggs will want his chicken of choice to look as the breed should look and to produce a good number of eggs. As a potential keeper you need to make the decision on whether you want show types or utility and source your birds accordingly, asking the seller how well their chickens lay or if they are of a show type.

All of our Cream Legbars are selected for breed standard characteristics and utility. We have hens from three sources and cockerels from three different sources so that we can breed unrelated lines together to end up with a strain that is not inbred and maintains it's genetic diversity. We have enough birds to close our flock for four years without inbreeding. Thereafter good utility cockerels will be brought in to complement the best birds we have selected for our breeding programme. So far we have found that the show birds that we have brought in have performed very well with regard to utility aswell as producing some very nice young cockerels and pullets, from which we have examined and selected the very best to breed from for 2018.
