Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare Description

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare is devoted to caring for retired racing greyhounds and finding them homes. We are self-funding and rely on the kindness and generosity of our supporters and the general public.

We care for approximately 80 - 100 greyhounds at our kennels in Hersham, with the majority of these gifted onto us by their owners or trainers once their racing days are over. However, when necessary we do step in and help those less fortunate greyhounds who are at risk, as and when we are able. We take in all colours and personalities regardless of their homing chances.

We operate a ‘no destruction’ policy, which means that no greyhound will be put to sleep except on health grounds when there is no other option. For those greyhounds with long term medical or behavioural issues we have The Sanctuary – their home for as long as they need it. We actively promote the fact that greyhounds make wonderful pets and adapt to life after racing very well.

"Yesterday lovely WGW hounds Tina and Larry had some relaxing time under a tree at West End Common. Tina and Larry settle down nicely in the car, walk gently on the lead, do not react to other breeds, are very chilled and super cuddly 💕 they are ready for their forever homes....please go and meet them 💜💙💚"
Taking the kennel hounds out for a walk is an important part of getting them socialised and ready for rehoming. If you'd like to help with this, just come down to the kennels. We are open every day between 11am and 2pm. No need to book ahead. If you have never walked any of our hounds before then the very first time you come you will need to bring two forms of ID (one with photo, one with address).

This fantastic video was put together by kennel assistant Beth to spread the word about WGW and its lovely hounds who are still looking for homes. Please share it far and wide!

Reminder that Gunnersbury Park fun dog show is coming up this Sunday from 11am until 5pm. WGW will have a stall there and we still need helpers. Entry to the event is free; registration in each class costs a few pounds. The web site for the event says that all free tickets are sold but there will still be free entrance and payment for registrations on the day.

"Massive thanks to everyone who has donated coins/notes to the collar fund. We have just spent the first £50.10 on 30 collars for our kennel hounds. Here is Frankie modelling one of the new collars."
Thanks again to all who have contributed to our "Coppers for Collars" drive down at the kennels and special thanks to Julia for coming up with the idea!

Walk report for Colleen
Volunteer Nina writes:
"Madam Colleen accompanied me on another little stroll around Painshill today.
... She is a happy go lucky little imp and absolutely ADORES cuddles and human attention. Which is handy as for training her, praise and cuddles are all you need!
Today we zig-zagged through a narrow passage at Painshill entrance past a French bulldog, a JRT, a cavapoo (or similar), a couple of golden retrievers, a spaniel and a terrier cross and with a little reassurance Colleen walked past them all with just a little low growl. Nothing else.
Pretty sure this girl will improve massively with other breeds when she has a forever sofa and a loving hand to guide her. Unfortunately she's been at the kennels for over 2 years now, because she needs that extra love and guidance with other breeds. Feels very unfair though as in a home she would certainly improve.
She would probably be good as an only dog or with a very tolerant boy (and a confident, experienced human).
She is full of character, gives the most enthusiastic greetings and most loving cuddles (her ears are super soft!).
If you are looking to fill a hound shaped hole in your heart - look no further! Give kennels a call."
You can find out more about Colleen on our web site: https://www.hershamhounds.org.uk/coleen/< br> If you're interested in rehoming Colleen or any of the 80+ greyhounds at our kennels that are looking for homes, please phone the kennels on 01932 251894 and speak to our manager Carol. You can then visit any day between 11am and 2pm to meet the hounds.

PAWS IN THE PARK - ARDINGLY - 18/19th May
If you're looking for something to do with your hounds this weekend please consider joining WGW at the Paws in the Park Spring Show, Ardingly, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 6TL, on Saturday 18th May and Sunday 19th May.
Our volunteers will be putting on a Dogstable fun agility course and WGW stall at this very large dog event both days and could do with all the help we can muster. The course is a very popular event where dog owner...s race with their pets around against the clock through, under, over and around obstacles in return for a donation to WGW.
Aside from the Dogstable Course and WGW stall there's plenty more to see and do at this show, including dog shows, more agility events and doggy-related shopping.
If intending to bring your own hound, do be aware that the site will be popular with smaller breeds off-lead!
The show's web page is at: https://www.pawsinthepark.net/
Here's some photos from previous years.

Last weekend was a really busy one for our volunteers as we were attending three different events!
Thanks to everyone who turned out to Chestnut Sunday in Bushy Park on our behalf. We were invited to take part in the parade and were able to run our stall and show off the beautiful hounds.

Thanks to everyone who helped out at or came to visit us at the Richmond May Fair, which this year for the first time was on both Saturday and Sunday.
Great organisation by Sharon McLeod, and thanks also to Be Richmond for inviting us and setting out all the stands so well - very helpful to be able to leave things in place over night.
... The weather was very kind and the dogs had a great time, so did all the visitors. This is a long time favourite event of ours and this year certainly did not disappoint! We even had a visit from former Hersham hounds Slim and Wish.
£908.55 was raised from donations and shop sales. Thank you generous fair-goers!

Thank you to everyone who turned out to The Dittons Fair on Sunday. This lovely little event has invited us for a few years now, and people are always very generous and interested in the hounds.
As ever, David Clarke and Jackie Younis did excellent work organising, also thanks to Mark Sherren for selling dog treats to raise more funds.
... £205.63 was raised from treats, games on the stall and bucket donations.
