Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market & Ice Rink Description

It is recognised as one of the best in Europe and loved for its unique location—nestled beside the cathedral in its historic close and surrounding a real ice rink. Find over 100 chalets filled with high quality exhibitors, hand-picked for their interesting, unique and exclusive products. The focus on British crafts, independent traders and artisan festive foods, as well as regular performances by local choirs, really does make this market stand out from the rest.

Lovely , (so much better than Soton ) Mulled wine .. Croque Monsieur , Toasted Marshmellows , Roasted Chestnuts ... we were on a foodathon. Lovely friendly people . The only down side trying to view , could do with a one way system . It was very difficult to get round with a pushchair/ grandbaby . ( would be nice to have a buggy path , but I understand lack of space ) Also the Croque Monsieur stall could do with more people , we waited so long for our toasties . People did not know what side or where to queue . Crafts section was just too packed .

User

Winchester a great day out for the whole family, went to the Christmas market on Thursday late afternoon / early evening, very easy to park the car and a leisurely stroll around the vast array of stalls. Also visited the Cathedral for that extra Christmas experience. Overall a excellent experience and a must for another visit in 2018

User

We wandered the Christmas market on Saturday along with thousands of others. The only downside was the queues plus I hated with a vengeance the bridge to cross into the British Stalls area from the European sector. It felt like I was in a ghetto during WW2 where the people had a star on their chest. But taking that away it was nice. Lovely things to buy, eat, enjoy. Even though a lot were overtly expensive.

We visited yesterday, Tuesday, for the day. After a walk around the cathedral and some time admiring the huge Christmas tree (and the robins!) in there, we ventured out into the market. It's a smallish market (about an hour to look around properly) but that suited us. There was a pleasing variety of stalls and it all looked very festive. As darkness fell it looked so beautiful and we very much appreciated the children's choir singing for us. The skating was nice and quiet so we decided to have a go and that was a lot of fun! The Ice Cafe here was a welcome spot to sit and have hot chocolate amongst twinkling lights and the food looked good too. The market too was thankfully quiet during the afternoon, enough people to make it feel festive but still plenty of space to look around properly and comfortably. It's really started our Christmas on a happy, festive note!

User

We only spent a few hours at the market, on our way back from Bournemouth to Cambridge on Sunday, so wasn't a brilliant day for travelling, but we all said, love to spend a weekend in Winchester to have a proper look around, thought some of the food was a bit pricey..

User

We visited mid-day on a Monday so, while it was busy ... you could negotiate through the crowds quite easily. It looked very nice and was quite festive, so it was worth the visit. It was nicely laid out and very tidy but I have to say that on the whole, it mainly caters for ladies of a certain age. It's all craft stuff, candles, smellies and ornaments. My big gripe however was the price of snacks. Outrageous !!! £5.50 for a Bratwurst and £4.00 for a mulled wine. Food stalls were a total rip off in my book and very few of them about, so limited options, which keeps the prices up.

User

We took our 4 grandchildren for their first time aged 10 9 7 and 5 and 2 teenagers on Sunday 10th Dec

Even though we went late afternoon it was really busy

We've been quite a few times before but this year it did seem more of a business than a family trip although it was efficient on the ice rink it was like one lot off next lot on

But the children enjoyed it

User

We thought it was better this year especially the feel of the markets and the lights. Yes would be nice to have something for the children like a merry go round or to see a donkey reindeer perhaps.. or father Christmas on a sleigh..the lce ring could have had a few decorations around. There always room for improvement each year. We enjoyed our evening anyway.

User

Visited on Monday 4th December pm. It wasn't busy at all so it was pleasant to have a really good look round. It was light so didn't feel that Christmasy to begin with, but as darkness fell it developed more atmosphere. The music was pleasant but 'live' singers would have added to the feel. I think the stalls themselves lack some festivity....perhaps more snow effect/lights etc. Alot of the stalls were selling similar items so I suggest you go all round once to view and assess items then go back again to get the best deals as prices vary for the same things. Didn't have any food/drink so can't really comment, but did notice lack of seats to eat or at least high tables to stand at, as you get on the continent. All in all a pleasant experience and I would revisit next year.

User

Visited Sunday and was pleased that the stalls stayed open after four. Lots of nick nacks but some were overpriced. If it could be better it would be more spaced out as the stalls were so close that couldn’t get to see all of the goodies. We hat the fried potato and sausage and it was lush. Great afternoon thank you 😊

User

Truly beautiful cathedral inside and out. Markets stalls themselves were lovely wooden sheds but in my opinion, this year there were far too many jewellery stalls and woollen scarfs, hats/gloves stalls. There were some nice food and drink stalls more seating needed. As a Christmas market I expected to see more Christmas decorations stalls and foreign Christmas decorations stalls. Had a great day, although it was freezing cold, but I won’t be going next year but perhaps the year after to give it another chance.

User

The market had finished as was NY Eve but the rink was great fun. Busy but not too crowded and the ice Marshalls were really attentive and with fallen skaters in a flash. The time allowed was about right for me, enough to go from scared and bambi like to relaxed and enjoying it, admittedly I was simply skating round but that’s all I hoped to do. Good sound track too. Remember to dress warm and wear gloves. Thanks,

User

It was nice and looked really Christmassy but the stalls were a bit hit and miss , they got the food and drink right though! The whole of Winchester town looked lovely and it was worth the 130 mike round trip to visit .

User

We visited on Christmas Eve. We travelled from Yorkshire to visit our family & thought it would be a very festive way to spend Christmas Eve. The Ice Skating was good. However we were all disappointed to see that all the Christmas Market stalls were closed. There was only the cafe open & only so much coffee one can afford to drink. We as a family of 6 & felt disappointed.

Thankfully we all love Winchester & the lights were lovely.

User

Nothing spectaular lots of the same type of stalls.

Most extremely over priced! I don't mind paying a little mire for something unique, but will not pay extra for stuff clearly available cheaper elsewhere.

Needed more Christmas atmosphere to match the huts and decoration.

The ice rink is good but again not very christmassy.....

You also need to think about shelter, British weather and all that.

User

This was rubbish...possible the worst I've ever been to. I was expecting so much but it delivered very little. Not very festive feeling until it got dark but it's just so small and very very expensive. I won't be visiting again.

User

The ice rink was far too busy. It's was never that busy when we've skated on a Saturday near Christmas before...as a result there were too many people crashing into each other and hanging off the side rails.

I felt that the organisers were trying to cram in too many people to make money rather than considering enjoyment and safety.

User

Carnage at the ice rink today. Too busy and too many wheelchairs and buggies on the ice. Very unsafe in my opinion. Ended with my daughter having a lovely gash on her chin and a trip to A&E for some stitches. Stick to Basingstoke ice rink in future, much safer.

User

Quite possibly the most least festive "Christmas" event I've been too. So so crowded, which of course we expected, but it was just too much. Nothing really for kids, I really expected a bit more for the children there. All the stalls are pretty much the same thing, scarves glass jewellery occasionally something different but most it was all the same- nothing really significant. A few food stalls but no where at all to sit!!!! Could really do with some seating.

The whole market really lacked that festive feel- felt more like a business type event rather than a family event.

The ice skating was even worse- £40 to spend 10 mins on the ice. Far too many people on there at once making it unsafe in my opinion for children to even have a remote chance of trying to skate. My daughter (age 7) came off in tears after 10 mins as she just couldn't manage to even try to have a go with the amount of people you had crammed onto the ice!! I've never had an experience like that when skating before- horrific.

We couldn't wait to leave- what a disappointment
