What's is Cha Chaan Teng?
( Hong Kong Style Cafe )

Cha Chaan Teng ( Lit. : Tea Food Hall) meaning tea restaurant is a unique food culture in Hong Kong. It carries several identities historical cultural value and memories in Hong Kong.

" Cha Chann Teng's" former name is " Bing Sat"
( Ice Chambers). During the British colonial period, the westren style food has been introduced into Hong Kong.
While the western restaurant and dining rooms would only provide the western style food to higher class people and the foreigners.

The traditional " Bing Sat" mainly provide coffee, tea with milk, red bean ice drink, sandwiches, butter toast, pineapple buns and egg tarts. Later on, they graually increased the food type and combined the western restaurent and dining experience together. Then the " Bing Sat" evolved into today's Cha Chaan Teng"


The traditional " Bing Sat" generally had two floors, an iron door, ceiling fans and hand written menus.
Nowadays the " Cha Chaan Teng", no longer only serves the upper class. Now everyone can enjoy it.

The environment of " Cha Chaan Teng" is constantly changing. Some old " Cha Chaan Teng" may still keep the outlook of the traditional one. However, people are still attempting to mix the Hong Kong traditions and modern architectural style in order to create new trends.
