About Winking Prawn

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, BBQ, ice creams, teas, coffees, even our own brand of locally brewed beer at our shabby chic beach restaurant cafe.

Winking Prawn Description

Big buckets of prawns, juicy steaks, fish dishes and breakfast buffets, ice creams, teas, coffees and even our own brand of locally brewed beer, the Winking Prawn’s style of shabby chic beach restaurant and cafe has been enjoying life at North Sands in Salcombe for more than 20 years.

Sandy toes and salty paws are welcome come rain or shine for breakfast, lunch and dinner (but don’t forget to book in the evenings and keep an eye out for seasonal opening times). In the summer we also have a barbecue in the garden to enjoy as the sun goes down, and our dressing up box is legendary for bringing out your inner pirate, mermaid or fairy princess no matter how old you are.

We went for our wedding anniversary and had a great meal. Friendly staff and beautiful location. You couldn’t ask for anything more. Perfect 👍🏼

We are a group of four females on a rare weekend away together. We stumbled upon Winking Prawn & it looked so appealing that we just had to stop & eat/drink there. The BBQ food did not disappoint & our waiter, James, was very attentive & humoured our giddiness amazingly well! A special thank you to James; we hope we didn’t get you into any bother!

User

Top quality food, friendly staff and amazing views of north sands!!!

User

To the lovely lady behind the counter today. You made my daughters day going above and beyond. She is autistic and had forgotten her cookie. Thank you so much, you restored my faith in humanity. ÔøΩ

User

Spent lots of time with you over the weekend of sunshine. You really manage to make breakfast lunch and tea just what's wanted, and create my very favourite place. Thanks guys.

User

One of the highlights of our holiday last week the crab baguette is stunning. We always have lunch here and then a sleepy afternoon on the beach

No trip to Salcombe is complete without a visit to the Winking Prawn! We just love it there. Sandy children, wet dogs, welly boots or flip flops! Anything goes, including your worries when you’re sat there looking out to sea watching the world go by!

User

Beautiful location. Very clean and presented restaurant. Friendly staff. We were lucky that it wasn't to busy so all our food was presented quickly and tasted bloody lovely! My bread and butter was sensational! (Not stale) it wasn't warm enough to sit outside so didn't need an umbrella so win win!! Parking on-site. They serve unbelievable tasting cider. My missus looked mint and my 15 month old has already asked can we go again soon. (He had that look in his eyes) so all in all highly recommended by me!!!

Any trip to salcombe would not be complete without a visit to the Winking Prawn! Food is yummy, the staff are friendly and the location is unbeatable. Fancy dress box is a welcome addition too, for adults and children alike! From ice creams to fresh lobster this place has something for everybody and if you’re visiting in the summer make sure to try the bbq. YUM.

User

Absolute happy place!!! Best view, best atmosphere, best staff, best food....we could literally eat a Winking Prawn BBQ every night!! Thank you for being our truly special place!!

Viewed the food but not eaten yet, the 5th star will have to wait

Third year in a row for visiting Salcombe and by default we always come here for the BBQ after a day on south sands. It's a great setting sadly a little cloudy yesterday so didn't get the full experience of sitting in the sun outside with the food. Love the BBQ and two between an adult and two children was more than enough for us. Lots of friendly staff but our table was left with dirty plates etc for a long while after we'd finished but other than that it was very good. See you next August!!

User

Great spot for a breakfast when out walking your dogs on the Beach great staff very friendly and food was very good and good facilities for the dogs water and treats in bucket üêæüêæ

Ok food and good atmosphere. Be careful if you have allergies. We made it clear to our waiter we had a milk and soya allergy on our table. He went off to check allergens etc and informed us we couldn’t have certain items. Fine. Then potatoes arrived with dressing (had milk in), salad arrived with croutons (milk and soya flour) and edamame on (soya) all had to be sent back. Worst was our sorbet arrive cross contaminated by dairy ice cream... Huge blobs of it. Clearly the scoop for dairy ice cream had been used to scoop the sorbet. Thank god we check everything. We would have livened up the place with an anaphylactic episode otherwise. Doesn’t have to be like this... we eat out often.

User

Lovely location and good breakfast. However have to agree with other recent reviews regarding the staff and lack of customer service! Stoney faced & miserable looking staff who gave the impression that customers were an inconvenience. It wasn't busy when I was there so no excuse for such poor service and bad vibes from the staff (especially the blonde long haired lady behind the counter who seemed more intent on rolling her eyes constantly and huffing & puffing to herself & gave the impression she wanted to be elsewhere!) Zero customer interaction which made for a really uncomfortable customer experience. This place was highly recommended to me but sadly I can't pass on such a recommendation. Staff - please cheer up & crack a smile it will do wonders for your ratings!

If you are vegan do not bother .

If you are vegetarian, extreme lack of imagination for dishes that are for vegetarian ,

Sheer laziness , vegetarian meals can be amazing , you will not find that here, boring and extremely pricey .

User

What a disappointment. Had been recommended by friends and looking forward to visiting however we were greeted by a restaurant opening 30 minutes late and rude sarcastic staff. When breakfast arrived the eggs were cold and tasted wet. Due to previous reviews, I guess we visited on an off day, but I wouldn't come again or recommend the Winking Prawn.

User

I have been to this place twice in recent weeks and the food has always been going. Less so the attitude of the staff ( less so the juniors) which is poor. Senior staff need too seriously work on how they welcome diners and try smiling more! Good food and a nice location but let down by shocking customer service!
