Wisbech Town Hockey Club Description

Welcome to Wisbech Town Hockey Club

Wisbech Town Hockey Club is a joint club with Wisbech Town Cricket Club. We share the same clubhouse in National Trust grounds which are part of the historic Peckover House estate. The club is run by a joint committee consisting of members from both hockey and cricket sections and is currently enjoying some considerable success in both sports, mainly due to the strong youth policies that have been put in place.

About Us
Our history

Wisbech Town Hockey Club Mens 1st TeamWisbech Town Hockey Club was established on Thursday 20th October 1939, where a public meeting was held at the Wisbech institute rooms. There had however been a ladies team established for some time before. The earliest record we can find being 7th January 1938.

During 1939 the club moved it grounds from Messrs Simpsons field, Black Bear Lane to the rectory, Walsoken. With the onset of World War 2 only mixed hockey was played between 1940 and 1945. After the war there were 3 first class players who knew the game very well, and were able to put their knowledge and enthusiasm into the game. Dr. G. Kennedy who had played hockey for Ireland. C. M. V. Sessions, and C. J. Harrison who were teaching hockey in schools.

During this period we were fortunate to have a first class captain in Sam Shippey, whose interest in sportsmanship in all games was well known.

Wisbech Town Hockey Club Mens 1st Team In 1949 the club played its hockey at Leverington but later moved back to the Rectory ground, Walsoken. Throughout this period both ladies and menтАЩs teams were fulfilling fixtures whilst in 1953 the menтАЩs team ventured on a tour to Dublin with tales of the unexpected still being recalled today.

During the 1960тАЩs the menтАЩs team attended the Blackpool Hockey festival, whilst the ladies team went from strength to strength. In 1962 the hockey club amalgamated with Wisbech Cricket club at itтАЩs Harecroft Road ground and in this period the joint Cricket and Hockey club increased in membership and playing strength.

The headquarters of the joint club consists of approximately eleven acres of ground, owned by the National Trust, with four grass pitches. (Still there today but not used since the club built an Astroturf pitch) these were laid out surrounding the main cricket playing area.

Wisbech Town Hockey Club Ladies 1st Team In 1974 Graham Ward (the newly elected chairman) decided to set up a junior section with the help of other leading members within the club, mainly: Max Huckle, Edward and Richard Sandall, Sam Shippey Junior, and Bernard Fletcher.

The aim was to encourage youngsters to join the club, and be taught how to play. They would have games every Friday afternoon when the youngsters and several seasoned players played together and the youngsters were instructed how to play.

The effect was dramatic - the youngsters were taught properly with the effect that the standard of teams put out from the club is second to none and many of the palyers went on to achieve higher honours. In 1981 /82 and 1982 /83 the clubs under 18's reached the finals of the national indoor championship.

The youth policy still continues today and it is not unusual to have over fifty youngsters attend junior training on Saturday mornings.

ЁЯПСЁЯПС MATCH REPORTS ЁЯПСЁЯПС ЁЯПС SATURDAY 15th FEBRUARY ЁЯПС
As Storm Dennis was predicted to do damage over the weekend there was some caution rightfully expressed by East League for clubs to make their decisions early. With heavy rain and 70mph winds set to descend over the east the decision was made to cancel all home games by the club on the advice given. Dennis didnтАЩt live up to his reputation but with the safety of players, traveling teams and umpires being paramount it was better t...o be safe than sorry! Not all fixtures took place across the local league this weekend and they will be played at the earliest opportunity.
LADIES 2тАЩs v CITY of PETERBOROUGH 4тАЩs
DRAW 1-1 From the start Wisbech knew they had a tough game against a more experienced stronger Peterborough side than at our home game. With both sides putting on the pressure Wisbech got the first goal from a short corner with Amelia Garfoot following up on the post from an Emma Baker strike. Wisbech had some good play moving the ball about from one side of the pitch to the other creating chances. Another short corner was awarded and with Oliwia Bolka on the other post from Emma Bakers strike, roofing the ball into the top of the net making this the goal of the season. Unfortunately the umpire ruled it out saying the strike from Oliwia was too high, despite not consulting with the other umpire who said it was a goal. Whilst Wisbech protested this with the umpire they let play go on and Peterborough broke in to the circle but Lucy Prior on her game cleared it off the line. So Wisbech went into half time just 1-0 up, struggling not only against storm Dennis but the umpires as well. Wisbech did take off the gas a little during the second half and Peterborough took advantage with a weak disappointing goal through lack off concentration in defence. The pressure was still on and Wisbech just couldnt find the net again. Some good contenders for player off the match Eva Miller in defence very solid, Lou Walker and Harriet Bateman working hard in midfield gaining confidence, but PoM goes to тнРя╕П Beth Holmes тнРя╕П who took the advantage off the space Peterborough gave her to making the runs down the right creating chances. This felt like a loss and a very disappointing game but Wisbech need to keep their heads up for the next local battle against Long Sutton. The ladies can still come away as champions playing the lower teams in the league and will continue to play as they always do, making the ball do the work.

****Umpiring Level 1 Course****
We are very fortunate that we already have several willing volunteers that give up their time, before or after their games. This is so that we can all play week in, week out! Without them doing this we would not be able to play.
Please can you contact me if you are willing to be one of these super stars.

Well done to the mixed under 10s and 12s today, with the under 12s consisting of 3 under 10s players. Both teams won 2 games and lost 1 with some positive and promising hockey played by all. A special thank you to parents, Sam Markillie for his coaching and Nicola Greville for organising the teams.
