We shared a wonderful evening on Sat 22 June of food, music and stories as part of our Christian Aid photography exhibition for Refugee Week.

Around 150 people gathered at Woking United Reformed Church on Sat 22 June to share a meal, music, stories and to visit a photography exhibition raising awareness of the 40million displaced people in the world at the conclusion of Refugee Week.
... Many Syrian refugee families were among those who gathered for the event, alongside members from the church, Woking People of Faith, Imam Hafiz Hashmi of Shah Jahan Mosque, and civic leaders including Deputy Mayor Saj Hussain.
Highlights of the evening included a musical performance on a traditional Syrian Oud lute accompanied by drumming and dancing, and a community meal cooked by a chef from the Syrian Community.
Stories were shared about the journey to escape war-torn Syria that many of the families have been on and friendships were made. Meanwhile, attendees were able to see the Christian Aid photography exhibition ‘Uprooted and Overlooked’, telling the stories of displaced people in different parts of the world, and the work being undertaken by the charity to help them.
An immersive Virtual Reality game was also popular with younger visitors, who were able to experience the feeling of becoming a refugee in a futuristic space story. The evening finished with a community meal of authentic Syrian cuisine.
Woking United Reformed Church hosted the event. Rev Lucy Brierley said, “We are thrilled by how many people came to share the evening. It’s wonderful that our town has provided a welcome to refugees whose lives have been turned upside down. But it’s also important that we continue the welcome after people have arrived, by learning from each other and telling our stories. Seeing everyone talking, eating and being together was a reminder that we are all part of one family – the human family.”

Today we were back in court for a further immigration hearing for our beloved church member, Fusi Motsamai . The story was covered on the BBC London news and by the Guardian. We await the judge’s decision and would appreciate your prayers. 🙏🏼

Sixteen of the Woking URC family completed the ‘Circle The City’ walk in London today to raise funds for Christian Aid. We visited lots of beautiful churches tucked away throughout the city and received a warm welcome at them all! #christianaidlondon #ctc2019
