Woof Less Wag More, Dog Training And Behaviour Description

Welcome to Life Skills Dog Training. We are a small dog training company covering Dorset and Somerset, that also offers behavioural consultations and one to ones.

Our training classes are held in Clapton Village Hall (nr Crewkerne).

Our aim is to teach you and your dog to work together and be able to face the daily challenges that the world throws at you using positive, reward based training methods. We do not use any methods that cause dogs pain, fear, or distress.

Life Skills Dog Training is run by myself, Rachel Hayball. I started my life with dogs as a young child helping my parents care for their dogs, and got my first dog at the age of 14. When i left school i studied animal care and canine behaviour at Kingston Maurward college, and a few years later got involved in dog rescue.

I have since set up a national dog rescue charity called Hounds First Sighthound Rescue. We rescue, rehabiliate and rehome hundreds of dogs each year, and many troubled souls pass through our doors. Many of these dogs have issues that would have preventable with the correct training and socialisation, and of course, and understanding owner.

I try to attend conferences on dog behaviour and training when i can, and found the Dog bite prevention conference (held by Victoria Stilwell) to be a real eye opener.

I have experience working with many different breeds of dogs, and will adapt my methods to suit.

I have also studied with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and am current studying with the International School of Canine Psychology and Behaviour. I am the only ISCP behavioural practitioner in Dorset.

I am a member of the Victoria Stilwell Positively dog Trainers, Pet Professionals Guild , INTO dogs and am an Registered Accredited canine Behaviourist

Adders are starting to be seen in the area and it is important to be aware of the potential risk to your dog.
Adders are found in a range of habitats including open heathland, woodland and moors. They require sunny glades or slopes where they can bask and dense cover in which to take shelter.
They are shy creatures and only bite when disturbed, scared or hurt... and dogs tend to get bitten when stepping on them or 'investigating' them with their nose.
... If your dog does get bitten take them to your vet immediately.

**Puppy training and socialisation myths!!**
Over the next week i am going to dispel some of the myths around puppy training.
Myth 1. My puppy needs to go to puppy playgroups/parties to socialise and play with other puppies.
... No. Your pup does not need to socialise and play with other puppies. Puppy play is often rough, it gets over the top and you often end up with one puppy being hurt or scared by another. This is not a positive experience for your puppy and negative experiences can do lots of damage.
Your puppy actually needs to learn to be around other dogs without playing with the other dogs. Your puppy needs to learn that it cannot go jumping on other dogs in play and needs to learn appropriate play.
Your puppy needs to meet other well mannered dogs in a calm controlled way.
Carefully managed puppy parties are good for some puppies, but please do not just go to them for socialisation. The most important socialisation and habituation needs to be done within your home and local area.

Some good advice for today.

It is fine to comfort your dog when they are scared.

A HUGE well done to Poppy and her owners Sarah and Dan.
I bumped into them (not literally) when walking one of my dogs today and was SO impressed by how calm Poppy was.
Poppy is fear reactive towards new people and dogs and Sarah and Dan have been following my behavioural plan, and have been working so hard to change how Poppy feels about other dogs and how she behaves around them, and it really really shows.
... Great work!
