About Workington Academy

Welcome to Workington Academy. We are an 11 -18 comprehensive school on the North West coast of Cumbria, serving the community of Workington and the surrounding area. Workington Academy is part of Cumbria Education Trust.

Workington Academy Description

Workington Academy is located on the west coast of Cumbria on the edge of the English Lake District. We are fully committed to providing the very best education to young people from this area, making Workington Academy the school of choice for our community. It is an exciting time to join the academy as we have just moved into a brand new £20 million state-of-the-art building.

Our mantra is to “Be the best you can be…” and our three core values: Respect; Responsibility and Resilience are all designed to put learning at the heart of everything we do. We are fully committed to meeting the emotional, cultural and academic needs of all the young people who attend the academy, supporting them to flourish and grow, with a relentless focus on academic outcomes. We also understand the importance of the development of wider skills to allow our students to grow into fully rounded individuals. We therefore provide a rich and varied range of extra-curricular activities including the arts and sport.

Expectations are very high at Workington Academy and this is reflected in our students’ appearance, behaviour and attitudes. We promote a calm, friendly and orderly atmosphere in classrooms and around the school site. We also recognise that excellent working relationships amongst students and staff are very important so a feeling of respect pervades the academy. We are proud of our school, the students and staff in it, and the aspirations we all share

We take the pastoral care and personal development of our students very seriously. Our House system and year groups have been designed to develop friendships and a sense of belonging around the school.

Sixth form students off to the UN under the Broken Chair statue.
It depicts a giant chair with a broken leg and stands across the street from the Palace of Nations, in Geneva. It symbolises opposition to land mines and cluster bombs, and acts as a reminder to politicians and others visiting Geneva.
