Today is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Bear Valley, the final battle of the American Indian Wars. Approximately 30 American cavalry faced a roughly similar sized force of the Yaquis people. In the ensuing firefight, the Yaquis commander was wounded and another nine were captured, with no American casualties. The commander later died of his wounds, and all but one of the warriors were found guilty of exporting arms and ammunition to Mexico, and were sentenced to 30 days in jail. The one warrior not found guilty was an 11 year old boy.

Today is the 70th International Human Rights Day, which commemorates the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UDHR is the most translated document in human history aside from the Bible.

Today is Liberation Day in Albania, celebrating the expulsion of the Nazi German occupation force. The Liberation was carried out by partisans, which included not only Albanians but also Yugoslavians and anti-fascist Italians - most notably the Antonio Gramsci Battalion.

On this day in 1870, the Bersaglieri of the Kingdom of Italy captured Rome, completing the unification of the Italian peninsula. Pre unification, there were many closely related regional languages spoken on the peninsula and the Italian language as we know it today is an evolution of the Tuscan language. The old languages of Italy have since become dialects as they have mixed and merged with the Standard Italian taught in schools.

On this day in 1679, Don John of Austria the Younger died. As the illegitimate son of the reigning King Philip IV of Spain, John became a notable administrator and diplomat in the sprawling and multilingual Hapsburg Empire, with his career taking him across Italy, Spain, Belgium, France and Portugal at least.

'Today is Roald Dahl Day, which is celebrated on three continents. Dahl's works have been translated into almost 60 languages. In Cardiff, the Oval Bay Plaza was renamed Roald Dahl Plass in honour of the author's Norwegian heritage.

Today is Azerbaijani Language and Alphabet Day. Azerbaijani is a Turkic language, closely related to Turkish and the two languages are somewhat mutually intelligible. The Azerbaijani alphabet uses Latin script, which started in 1929 replacing the Arabic script which is still used today by Azerbaijanis resident in Iran.

On this day in 1929, the Fascist government of Italy banned the use of foreign words. Italy was and is home to French, German, Slovenes and many other linguistic minorities, and the policy was intended to 'Italianise' these peoples.

Today is Tynwald Day, the national day of the Isle of Man. Until Britain adopted the Gregorian Calendar, Tynwald Day was held on the 24th June, the feast of St John the Baptist and Midsummer's Day. The decision was made not to shift the date to the 'new' 24th June, but to simply act as if the calendar had not been changed at all…
