Assessing the threat of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in Morocco: an Infectious Thoughts interview
In 2015, the mosquito Aedes albopictus was detected in Morocco's capital city, Rabat, threatening the region with the introduction of numerous arboviruses. Recent collaborative research between the Institut Pasteur, Moroccan universities and surveillance centres, has sought to establish the vector competence of these local mosquitoes in a bid to assess the risks of emergence of di...seases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever. In this Infectious Thoughts interview, we speak to Anna-Bella Failloux, head of the Unit of Arboviruses and Insect Vectors (AIV) at the Institut Pasteur in Paris about the likelihood of virus transmission by Aedes in the region and what this might means in terms of public health priorities and vector control strategies for North Africa and Europe.

Indoor Residual Spraying: evaluating novel methods for Aedes aegypti control
The proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito globally in urban areas as well as the evolving resistance to current insecticides is prompting researchers to refine and improve on current vector control methods. Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) has been an effective vector control strategy, but to overcome some of the limits to IRS scalability in dense urban environments such as application time and indoor accessibility, researchers from Mexico, the United States and Australia have been investigating the efficacy of modified IRS methods. https://bit.ly/2UBy72l

Mapping the global potential distributions of two arboviral vectors under changing climate
Dr. Abdallah Samy is a researcher based at the Entomology Department of the Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. In this Infectious Thoughts interview, Dr. Samy speaks about recent work on modelling the global distribution of the vectors of arboviral diseases under changing climate, how this can improve global public health strategies for dengue control for the forthcoming decades, and which knowledge gaps remain to be addressed given complex climatic change.

The economic burden of dengue in Indonesia, an interview with Dr. Mardiati Nadjib
Dr. Mardiati Nadjib is a researcher in the Health Policy and Administration Department at Universitas Indonesia. Indonesia has some of the highest rates of dengue cases worldwide and in recent work, Dr. Nadjib and colleagues have sought to improve the evaluation of the economic burden of dengue on the Indonesian health system, making the case for reinforcing investment in dengue prevention and in strengthening local and international partnerships to tackle this disease. New Toolkit for National Dengue Burden Estimation by WHO
To assist countries in improving accurate quantitative measurements of dengue, the World Health Organisation has launched a Toolkit for National Dengue Burden Estimation. There is an urgent need for improved estimates of the burden of dengue in prevention & control efforts, a task hindered by issues such as the large number of mild or asymptomatic infections, the heterogenous nature of transmission, long-term complications, or indirect costs to stretched health systems.
