WEM; a journey of passion?
When World Extreme Medicine ran its first course in Patterdale* in the English Lake District, the term ‘Expedition & Wilderness Medicine’ was rarely used; in fact, we were the first people to do so when we established our company. But it is amazing to see how its use has spread to the point that it has even been borrowed for the title of a book on the topic.
The original course sprang out of internal training courses provided to Across the Divide Ex...peditions for their own medics who wanted to learn specific pre-hospital skills. It has gone from there to a world-class conference, an International Post Grad Diploma and MSc program, a raft of world-class courses and medical location support for some of the world’s largest film productions.
We decided to rename ourselves 'World Extreme Medicine' to better reflect opportunities open to medics, not only in expedition medicine but also disaster & humanitarian medicine, military medicine and remote pre-hospital care.
We, as a team, are so utterly passionate about what we do we count ourselves honoured to have the opportunity to share our passion with an amazing group of delegates, students and course attendees. We count ourselves incredibly lucky.

A Never-Before-Seen Virus Has Been Detected in #Myanmar’s Bats.
Such discoveries are critical, because what happens in Myanmar doesn’t always stay in Myanmar. “Myanmar is in a central location in Southeast Asia—an area of primary concern for viral diseases and emerging infectious disease,” says Marc Valitutto, a wildlife veterinarian heading the efforts in the region, which is lush with tropical rainforest and rich in biodiversity.

How to make it in Expedition Medicine. People constantly ask what they can do in this area and our answer is ‘virtually anything’ but you have to create the opportunities, make your own luck and be innovative.
Whilst this article has a business focus it highlights that success in this area is ‘our people’ and it’s a useful story about the value of making connections..
Of course it would be churlish not to highlight the fact that the #WEM18 Conference is this year best event ...to attend to do just that!! https://www.extrememedicineexpo.com

Later in the year together with the Pakistan Society for Emergency Medicine, we are embarking on launching the Emergency Life Support Training program. A 2 day basic level course to be disseminated around the country. The aim is to focus on a training that is empowering where simple interventions can make big difference in resource limited situations.
We NEED your help. I have started a Go Fund Me site to help with purchasing the mannequins needed for the mobile training hub.... The money is for training equipment which we decided to purchase locally, through a local supplier.
https://www.gofundme.com/emergency-life-s upport-training-hu…
The rest of running of costs, travel, accomodation, time etc is self funded, volunteered by the faculty.
Thanks to Dr Amy Neilson for highlighting

I am doing the WEM and Peninsular Medical School Masters so got to participate in the Corfe course (say that 5 times fast!). The amount I learned was unbelievable from SAR to wiring a jaw! The facilitators are friendly and engaging and go the extra mile to help and encourage learning. Be prepared for an influx of Midwives because I’m recommending you to basically everyone I talk to! Can’t wait for the next one!

Great course, very experienced and knowledgeable instructors. I would highly recommend for anyone looking to get into medicine in remote places.

Desert Medicine Course in Oman. Book it in 2018. Absolutely fascinating. Brilliant mix of content both theoretical and practical, super experienced team, stunning location, fun free time from cinema evenings in the middle of the desert to talks by local adventurers to souq shopping. Tasty food, great trekking, sleeping out under the shooting stars and sitting around big fires chatting with interesting people. Perfect week.

Went on the course in the Lake District this March and can thoroughly recommend it. Just back from 4 weeks on the Mexican/Guatemalan border, canoeing down the Usumacinta River. I was the medic with a group from The Clipperton Project. the course helped me prepare and gave me more confidence. Now just looking forward to my next adventure!!
