Writing Our Legacy

About Writing Our Legacy

Raising awareness of the contributions of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) writers, poets, playwrights and authors born, living or connected to Sussex.

Writing Our Legacy Description

Writing Our Legacy is an organisation whose aim is to raise awareness of the contributions of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) writers, poets, playwrights and authors born, living or connected to Sussex and the South East. *

The organisation was established in April 2012. We run events across Sussex and the South East that showcase emerging and established BME writers and provide professional development and networking opportunities.

* Writing Our Legacy employs Mosaic’s definition of Black to be ‘Black people’ and ‘mixed-parentage people’ including all those people whose ancestral origins are African, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Middle Eastern, North African, Romany, the indigenous peoples of the South Pacific islands, the American continents, Australia and New Zealand.

BAME writers, listen up! You have until 12 July to enter the The Mo Siewcharran Prize, a new annual award for unpublished fiction writers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.......
They say: We’d love to hear from you if you’ve written a full-length novel for adults, have not had a book published by a UK publisher (or be under contract for publication by a UK publisher) and are aged 18 or over, resident in the UK and from a BAME background.
We are looking for co...mpelling, unique, relatable novels that tell us something about the world we live in and the breadth of human experiences. We love engaging narratives, compelling characters and developed themes, and welcome experimental fiction, literary tones, commercial concepts and writing in the genres of sci-fi and fantasy.
We are open to all adult fiction genres but we will not accept poetry, short story collections, non-fiction or books for young adults.

I was so pleased to stumble upon this video clip tonight. A great event & even though it's only 6 minutes, some powerful thoughts on how being a person of colour can and should be politic - with a capital B.

Here's one from the vaults - in 2017, we brought Black British author Sharon Otoo to Brighton from Berlin shortly after she received the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann prize.
In this short clip, Colin Grant & Umi Sinha discuss the use of mango in literature, then Colin asks Sharon 'Why do you use the capital b in Black to describe yourself?' An interesting conversation ensues.
A superb homecoming for Sharon Otoo, former Brighton resident, writer & activist! Watch it now on Youtube : https://youtu.be/wMWdfUNo04o

All lives matter?

Agreed!
"To address these issues, Mitchell has introduced a bill that would forbid employers from discriminating against employees who wear their hair in natural styles that are associated with being black. Senate Bill 188, the CROWN Act (yes, it’s a bit hokey: “Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair”) would amend a state law that bars various forms of discrimination — the California Fair Employment and Housing Act — to extend its protections to traits historically associated with a person’s race, such as hair texture and “protective hairstyles.” It cites braids, locks and twists as specific examples."

Five years ago I was invited by Amy Zamarripa Solis of WOL to appear at the Old Market in Hove with Jacob Ross and Colin Grant, who have both produced highly acclaimed books since then. David Nwokedi, also on the panel of writers, was a student of mine at the the University of Sussex and I am still waiting for his new book. That was one the first events I was ever invited to appear at as a writer, and was a big step in my decision to stick with it and finish my novel "Belonging" which has since been published by Myriad Editions and also published in India, Poland and Portugal. Since then I have taught workshops and done many other events with WOL, and they have all been wonderful, with the very special and relaxed atmosphere that only Amy can create. The food is always delicious too.
