Hi everyone and happy Wednesday👋🏻 I thought it was a good time to talk about trimming your dog’s nails 🐾 If you don’t have any clippers and need to purchase a pair make sure they have a nail guard as this prevents you from removing too much nail when trimming. Most brands will tell you what size dog they recommend their nail trimmers for. I’ve shown a picture of the nail trimmers I have and the smallest black pair are perfect for small dogs such as Terriers and small Coc...kapoos🐕‍🦺 I’ve also shown you a picture of the various styptic powders I have in case of a bleeding nail. If you don’t have something like this at home corn starch will do the trick! Of course, walking your dog daily on pavement will also help to wear them down naturally. If you do decide to try your dog’s nails I suggest a blanket or towel (like I suggested for brushing 🐕) and have them stand on that so they know to expect grooming from you. Lots of praise after each nail trim helps create good habits and reassures both you and your dog that you’re doing a great job! A high value treat afterwards would also help with getting your dog to behave accordingly. Good Monday morning everyone👋🏻 I hope you’re all staying safe and well. It was my boy Riley’s turn to have his teeth done with The Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning system this morning. In one 20 minute session I was able to remove the build up of plaque that had returned since I last did them about 8 months ago. Great results as always and I can’t recommend this system enough! 🐕Matts and Knots🐕‍🦺 As a Dog Groomer these are the things I dread. Small individual knots can be picked and brushed out in most cases. Use your fingers to pull them apart and finish with brushing the area when you feel you have the hairs separated enough. When these knots join together this is matting, and water - be it rain or bathing - compacts these matts causing felting which is tight to the skin and very uncomfortable for the dog. Once matts felt the most comfortabl...e and safe removal is by a groomer with clippers. It’s hair and it does grow back and the dog is much more comfortable afterwards which is the most important. This is where daily brushing comes in. Using this picture as a guide you should be able to avoid getting most matts and knots in your dog’s coat. If your dog is wearing a harness when out walking please remove it as soon as you get home and brush the areas it rubbed against. Necks, chests and tummies are the main areas to pay attention to once it’s off. If you have any questions please message me or call. I miss all my doggy friends and I’m here to help where I can. Hi everyone 👋🏻 If you’re fortunate enough to have one of these sprays in your house and a good brush, now is the time to start a daily routine of brushing your lovely dog🐶 If you’ve got a good routine in place keep up the good work! I know there are dogs that do not like brushing (Jenson 😉) and I get that, but they do get used to a daily routine if there is consistency. I suggest using a particular towel or blanket for them to stand on that they can associate with brushin...g. Preferably somewhere in the house not associated with play would be good. Try not to box them into a corner of the kitchen as they need to feel in control, even a little! Don’t try to do the whole dog each time. Try the back half or the front half and reward with lots of positive encouragement to your dog when you’re finished. They’ll expect you to be brushing all of their body and will be pleasantly surprised when you’ve only done half! The next time you brush them do the other half🐕. I can brush half of most dogs in under 3 minutes as a guideline. If you’re using a coat management spray try using in the evening after they’ve dried off from any mud or swimming, and after you’ve given them a good brushing. Coronavirus Update
CLOSED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT
With sadness the time has come, that the right thing to do is close my salon with immediate effect, in order to help in the collective battle against this virus.
... I don’t know at this point how long I will be required to stay closed, it seems it will be for a minimum of 3 weeks and possibly longer. As soon as I am able to re-open I will be back in touch with you all to offer rescheduled appointments.
In the mean time, please continue with the home maintenance, as coats get longer it will be more important than ever to brush, brush, brush! I will be posting hints & tips for home maintenance and will be available to answer all your home grooming questions by text or phone call ☎️
