Yellow Buses

We will be making our changes for the winter as from Sunday 9th September 2018.
The network will remain broadly the same but with some minor changes to timetables. In particular, to better match demand we will be making some changes to frequencies on a Saturday afternoon.

This week ‘Dennis Dart’ is on the trail of an interesting and unusual Midibus, which was operated by BTL in the 1980s. It may have been a small bus but it’s had a very big and varied history!
When new it was exhibited at the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court in 1979. It first entered service in Bournemouth as a demonstrator at the Confederation of Passenger Transport Conference on 19 & 20 September 1979.
It was also used as a demonstrator on the Town Centre service from... 10 to 14 October 1979. It was then demonstrated to several operators, before being sold to Marshall's (who had built the body and used it as a demonstrator) in 1981. They loaned it to Maidstone Borough Council in 1981/82 and it was then sold to Rambler Coaches of St Leonards-On-Sea, Hastings in October 1982. It was inspected by Bournemouth on 16 March 1983 and purchased on 15 April 1983. The photograph, courtesy of David Chalk, shows it in the paint shop just prior to it entering service. It entered service on 12 July 1983, mostly on the Town Centre service.
The original seats were replaced by high-backed seats from Leyland Leopard coaches (Fleet No’s 90 to 92) in 1983 and in 1986 it was fitted with the front dome and windscreen from Leyland Atlantean 240 which had been broken up for spares.
It was withdrawn in February 1988 and sold to AWD of Dunstable in March 1988 for experimental work. AWD bought the Bedford truck business from General Motors. It then passed to J.H. Engineering, a dealer based in Diss, Norfolk and then Holloway of Denton as a non-PSV in March 1992 and then back to Rambler Coaches in 1993, They purchased it the second time as a preservation project and it was exhibited at some rallies but it was not used by them after 1995 and was stored until sold in 1999, when it passed to First Choice Travel, Peterborough, who sold it to a Mr. Goodman in 2002.
In 2007, it was sold to Birkby Lodge Retirement Home in Lytham St.Annes, Lancashire near Blackpool. They used it as a mobile caravan with 13 seats and a toilet. It won several awards at vintage vehicle rallies. It has now been sold again, to an owner who is intending to restore it to its original condition as a bus. Interestingly, Bournemouth borrowed the other three JJL's from Maidstone Borough Council in 1982/83 with a view to purchase, but they were all returned with various faults.

These are from the batch of eighteen Sunbeam MS2 trolleybuses delivered in 1934. Most men in those days wore hats or caps.
