Into the West.
Sunset & moonrise.
Sometimes you can find more than you were ever looking for.
The wonderfull 'People from the Past' have joined us over the last two weeks. Here they are, Caradosius and Lucilla, using a quern to make flour, exploring Hardknott Fort and helping us to teach Roman and Celtic history to visiting schoolchildren.
Moments of calm. Please forgive us, but we’re keeping the location of these swim spots a secret!
Eskdale Needle with the Scafell's behind. This is a rarely visited place. There are no paths to it even though it's really quite a dramatic place.
Our resident family of slow worms!
As part of our World Earth Day Celebration, with the help of Irton Art Group, we hosted a workshop making artists materials from natural resources. The clay oven was in high demand to create charcoal sticks, wax paint and a pizza lunch. The artists demonstrated superb creativity making homemade paper sometimes incorporating bark and petals and all the artists left with a feeling experimentation and fun. Thanks everyone for joining in.
YHA Eskdale celebrated World Earth Day on Sunday by cleaning a mile long stretch of the Cumbria coast. We started at Selker Bay and had wonderful support from YHA guests and the locals of Eskmeals, Waberthwaite and Bootle. With the help of the local farmers we filled to overflowing a tractor trailer with plastic. Thanks everyone for your support and a great day out.
The first of this year's new lambs in the hostel field - so cute!
They are out of hibernation! One of last year’s newly born adders!
Beautiful day for a walk over Whinn Rigg & Illgill Head. Wasdale, our neighbouring valley, looking glorious in the sunshine.
YHA Eskdale is well and truly open for the summer! We have been enjoying some beautiful early season weather - the fells are calling! We hope to see you all soon.
Our friends from Bolsover Woodlands Enterprise are with us again this week for an Exclusive Hire winter break. Today we visited our neighbours at Taw House Farm and Andrew gave us a tour of his wonderful traditional Cumbrian hillfarm. The highlight was Andrew and Gem the dog's superb sheepdog demonstration and then an opportunity for the group to feed the sheep. Thanks Andrew, the group had a great time.
These are two of Eskdale's many perched boulders. Both over a tonne in weight they've sat precariously on their rocky outcrops since melting ice popped them in place at the end of the Ice Age. That's a long lonely vigil of about 10,000 years.
What a great bunch of people still miss yas xo
Very clean generally, comfortable sleeping arrangements and good basic food. A bit on the expensive side, but it is the Lake District, so nothing is ever cheap!
This is a cosy, friendly hostel; not too big and not too small. The facilities are well maintained and the rooms were warm. The food was well prepared and served by friendly staff. The location is very rural with plenty of walking opportunities in the vicinity.
Stayed here Summer 2016, Lovely friendly staff and manager. Great pub next door. We'll be back.
