We've never stayed at a YHA property before but thought we'd give it a go. WOW, it was amazing, from the staff who were so friendly and welcoming, to the fantastic property, we'd read a few negatives on trip adviser but were all so wrong, someone said the breakfast was great but the evening meal wasn't, couldn't disagree more, we ate some lovely food last night cooked fresh to order ,our eldest son hand a handmade pizza and loved it, our youngest had the fish goujons and loved it, we both had the 3 choice tapas each and it was delicious, not bad price too, all 4 meals, a bottle of wine and 2 soft drinks for 40 pounds ,a bargain, breakfast was delicious and like last night was cooked fresh. Another negative was noise at night in corridors, I never heard a thing and I'm a light sleeper. The rooms are cosy and well maintained, the shared bathrooms (2 lockable toilets, and 2 lockable showers) were clean and more private than expected. The lounge etc. Are stunning, where else can you enjoy a night in surroundings like this for 39 pounds a night, we will return and start to look for others to use.

We got married at Ilam Hall in Jan 2016, the staff were absolutely amazing all weekend, everyone loved the food and all the bedrooms were great. Plus the views are stunning. We definitely chose the right venue and hope to be back to stay again as soon as we can.

Stayed last weekend with a mixed group. The dorm was modern, clean and very comfy bunks. We self catered and kitchen facilities were perfect, good value breakfast if you don't want the bother. Just add sunshine and I'll be back, stunning spot :)

Set in beautiful grounds, room was clean and comfortable with shower and toilet. Sitting room, small bar with snacks. Food was good had evening meal and breakfast. There are lots of area's to walk and maps available to guide you. I found the staff were very helpful. Would recommend IIam Hall and will be staying there again.

Myself and my husband started what we thought was a 5 mile loop from Thor's Cave...ended up in Ilam Hall, some 7.5 miles out!! We went into the shop to enquire on our whereabouts and a very lovely lady called Clare gave us a lift back to our car - thank you so much Clare, we don't know how to thank you! Without you we would have been wandering round some very dark fields with no phone signal!! You've gone far and beyond your duty, a very good deed for the day and one myself and my husband are deeply grateful for! Thank you! Xx

User

Just had a fantastic summer hols mini-adventure with my 3 kids (3, 5 and 7) and was really impressed with our night at this beautiful hostel. The staff were so helpful and professional and our room was very clean and cosy! The games room was a lovely place to hang out after a hard day hiking. We really enjoyed our evening meal, but the breakfasts were really top notch! A very memorable first "Full English" for the kids! The grounds of the Hall are great for a fun morning of orienteering, pooh sticks and scrambling about, but we found that it is ideally located for Dovedale and Manifold Valley (and Thors Cave). We've come home for a rest....but will definitely be back! Thank you!

Just back from our wonderful stay at Ilam Hall which is out first ever time in a YHA. We loved every minute. I was on my own with 5 children who are normally glued to technology but with the gorgeous landscape surrounding ilam we couldn't resist going out for a wander. We will definitely come back again with my partner next time as he would fall in love with the place like us. Thank you for a wonderful stay. From the rooms to the food, it was all fantastic.

It's amazing how this huge hostel is hidden away inside this grand old building. The facilities are top quality and the staff were great. In particular I'd like to thank the beautiful hula hoop girl on reception for some good banter - helping to keep a solo hiker sane! Wish I could have stayed longer

I had never stayed at a YH before and was unsure what to expect, but I was impressed! The room was clean and comfy, and the communal facilities were great. Brilliant for families, already looking at holidaying in YHA properties elsewhere. Had regularly visited Ilam for years and never knew this was here! A privaledge to stay in such an amazing building and location. The staff particularly stood out as being very friendly and helpful. And the food was great! We will be back soon!

User

Beautiful building in a stunning location. We came as a large family group and all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms were very warm and comfy, washroom facilities were light and clean, self-catering kitchen very well equipped. Wonderful to be able to park up on arrival and not use the car again until we left. Lovely walks right on the door step. No phone signal and the WiFi being down meant it was a tech free weekend, which made for great interaction between the generations. Our party ranged from 11 months to 82 years and we all had a super time. Thank you to the whole Ilam team xx

Apart from reporting a few little issues of items not working, I still can't believe I just stayed in a Youth Hostel and not Mini Downton Abbey! Incredible! and Ilam Park is simply stunning at the moment with the Autumn colours. I can't wait to return. So many beautiful walks on the doorstep. All staff friendly and helpful.

User

Absolutely fantastic place, everything was perfect and I cant wait to come back and stay again.

User

A great place to stay with the family. Set in a beautiful building with incredible grounds. Our children loved the games room and

the grounds. It's a shame that not all the guests bother to tidy away after they wash up etc. Staff very helpful and friendly.

User

A great location, great staff, a fantastic price and some guid beer, what more can one ask for.

User

Really beautiful building and grounds. Great facilities for families and large parties staying, especially having two large lounge areas. Self-catering kitchen was lovely and clean. Catered food was good. Communal bathrooms nice. Only issue was that we thought we had booked an en suite room. This was important to us as our kids have disabilities. However when we arrived we found out that the room was not ensuite. We requested a change to an ensuite room but this could not be accommodated by the staff. Suggest that the website is changed to make it clear that a family room does not always mean an ensuite.

User

Pretty happy with our stay! First experience of a YHA. Room was clean, surroundings are beautiful. Staff friendly and pool table, pong pong etc available for the kids.

We downer was no phone signal anywhere on the grounds (o2) and wifi only worked in communal areas. As a mum on my own travelling with two kids was a wee bit of a worry if something was to happen. However not being stuck to our phones was also fab for actually having face to face convos and playing a few games of cards. Overall very good for what you pay and fine for us for one night.

Alton Towers easy to get to from here and only took us 15mins.

User

First time staying at a youth hostel. Beautiful building in stunning grounds. Lovely walks right on the doorstep. Weather was fantastic which always helps. Breakfast great. Staff welcoming. Booked 4 beds for 2 adults and 2 children in shared room as that was only availability. Just pressumed we would have 2 bunks so adults sleep on bottom kids on top. This isnt the case you take the beds that are available. We felt a little old to be sleeping on top. Definately stay again but in a private room.

User

First experience of the YHA With my family. Ilam YHA is a stunning location. We had a family room with en suite which was clean and was fine as our base. The staff were really friendly and helpful, great breakfast and good food in general. All the facilities were very good with the exceptions of the seats in the play room which looked like they had seen a few years but hey for £59 a night for a family room you cannot really grumble. Would definitely stay again.
