The blizzards have cleared and the views from the hostel are beautiful in the late afternoon sun. Time to put the fire on!

Last week, we were visited by a wonderful lady who was able to share stories of her time here at the hostel – around 75 years ago!
Mari Black (Nee, Santamara) was an evacuee during the Second World War, when children from industrial areas were moved to the countryside for their safety from German bombing raids.
Mari came from Liverpool as a three year old and remembers her time here at the old hostel building. She can remember her room at the top front of the house and has m...emories of playing with another child, David by the river and in the meadows.
Her father returned from the war, and the family settled down in nearby Glenridding. Sadly, having survived the war, her father later died in an accident at the nearside Greenside mine.
It was a real honor to meet someone who could recount memories of their time here during the 1940’s and provide a first hand account of what it was like at the time.
Thanks Mari for sharing your story with us, and please feel free to drop in again!
All the best,
The YHA Patterdale Team

Lots of young birds around YHA Patterdale at the moment. We've had regular visits from some woodpeckers on the food feeders we've put out. Can't decide whether this is a youngster or not (we've seen a couple recently that seem smaller?)
Any twitchers out there who can help us understand what's visiting us would be great!
Many thanks, The YHA Patterdale Team

Here's a few pictures to give you a feel of the local area around the hostel.

We're lucky enough to be on Alfred Wainwright's "Coast to Coast walk" so we couldn't miss the opening of the Ullswater Heritage Trail the other day.
There's a plaque outside Patterdale post office (just over the road from us) to commemorate it being the first place IN THE WORLD to sell his legendary guidebooks!

We stayed this weekend - hired the full hostel as part of the exclusive hire they do and loved it. Set in a great location for walks (and pubs). The hostel itself has everything you need for a great party weekend venue

I use the campsite taking in all the advantages of using the hostels facilities, best of both worlds. Fantastic location for walks straight from the hostel, Inc Helvellyn and 5 mins walk to The White Lion

All the staff were amazingly helpful and friendly someone I knew stayed at the other one and it's at the end of a really steep road that was really hard to drive up. This one is along the main through road and has free WiFi in the communal areas clean and tidy. The breakfast is totally worth it would defiantly stay again

Wow YHA's have really improved since I last stayed at one (over 20 years ago!!). Would recommend for 1 or 2 nights and good for families. However don't use the local taxi M&A Taxi - very angry man who thinks it's ok to shout and swear at female customers.
