About Yha St Briavels Castle

Whether travelling independently, with a family or friends, or with a larger social group, St Briavels Castle is a venue with a real “WOW” factor.

Yha St Briavels Castle Description

Whether travelling independently, with a family or friends, or with a larger social group, St Briavels Castle is a venue with a real “WOW” factor that will amaze and inspire young and old alike. The Castle is over 800 years old, with bags of character and remarkably well-preserved features throughout, and a basic charm that promotes social interaction and historical interest in equal measure. You enter this remarkable and unique YHA site through a triple portcullis gatehouse into a secluded courtyard and walled garden, and then enter through the grand wooden period door into the West Tower to a warm welcome fit for a King or Queen. Take a walk through time within this former hunting lodge of King John from the 13th century, spend a peaceful moment in his Chapel, rest your feet in his bed-chamber, and wonder who spent time in the debtors prison and met their grizzly end on the Castle gallows. The Castle is a Grade 1 listed ancient monument, a rich piece of our heritage and an inspiring location at amazingly affordable prices. The perfect background for weddings, private parties, family holidays, activity breaks, as well as school visits (where students really do “learn outside the classroom” as they are transported back in time to Medieval world of King John and the Magna Carta).

Access to the hostel is limited during the day. The castle has two huge traditional gates that are locked at 11. 30pm.

Last Sunday, Forest and Wye after trying to attack, in vain 😎, our walls 🏰. They tried to lure us out with the smell of BBQ ...
They Won.😅 😋🍔

We had an amazing stay for a 40th a few weeks ago, and to top off our stay the friendly staff recovered our ipad that we managed to leave behind!?

We had an amazing stay at Saint Briavels on Saturday 12th August. We didn't want to leave! It is a beautiful castle in a stunning setting. All the staff were friendly and extremely helpful. Medieval banquet...food and entertainment was fab and we all loved being the head table for the night to celebrate Sam's 9th birthday! Castle tour was fab (...as was YHA's Chris...the oobly boobly man..!!.). Archery lesson rounded off our weekend perfectly. I also feel quite privaledged to have heard was turned out to be 'Tom' rolling his stones around...eeekk...exciting! Thankyou all for a fantastic and memorable time!

We had a lovely time here. Really exciting to stay in such an historic building, with beautiful surroundings and good friendly service to boot.

Our class adored our residential to St Briavel's and haven't stopped talking about it since. The archery and castle tour in particular went down really well. All of the staff were brilliant but Chris went above and beyond- from giving us helpful directions for our minibus the day before we arrived to dressing up as a medieval constable and leading us in our banquet. An unforgettable and faultless experience.
