Yha The Sill At Hadrian'S Wall Description

YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall is the brand new Youth Hostel at The Sill, a landscape discovery centre, in partnership with the Northumberland National Park Authority.

Ideally located in the beautiful countryside of the Northumberland National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this high spec hostel is perfect for exploring the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage site, located just a few hundred metres away, as well as Sycarmore Gap and the Roman fort at Vindolanda.

The Landscape Discovery Centre attached to the hostel includes inspiring exhibition space plus a shop and café with a large terrace which is perfect for admiring the spectacular views. Outside there are innovative spaces designed specifically for outdoor learning, music and theatre, or to just sit and soak up the surroundings.

Not only is there plenty to do in the day but there's plenty to do at night too. YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall is located in a Dark Skies area and so is great for star gazing without the light pollution common in towns and cities.

Very impressed with this new facility. We'll be back to sample the cafe on the roof

Took my grandson for a look around. It was wonderful and made me very proud to think I am part of the Northumberland heritage shown there.

User

Spotlessly clean, beautiful setting, very friendly staff - at 43 I'm ashamed to say it was the first time I have ever stayed in a Youth Hostel but it won't be the last; we absolutely loved it so much so my 7 year old cried when we left. We will be back 😊

User

Not like they used to be! Key card entry, ensuite room and you don’t have to remove the bed sheets before you go in this one. Pricey, but we took advantage of a special offer. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this thoroughly modern hostel. Adjoined to Northumberland National Park Authorities State of the Art 14.8 million visitor centre with some fantastic interactive stuff for kids (and adults!) and a gift shop. Lovely views towards Hadrian’s Wall from the cafe and rooftop walk.

My wife and I decided to have a break from Xmas shopping and have a weekend here, booked a twin room and got a 4 bedded room so loads of space for us, think there were only 2 other rooms taken so maybe a free upgrade which we were grateful for. Freezing cold and icy on the Wall but very warm in the hostel.

Didn't use the bar or dining facilities as we go self catering but the provided facilities were excellent and we didn't feel them small as others have said. Having said that I'd agree that if the hostel was full it may be an issue.

Room excellent as were the ensuite facilities, main communal area is open plan and again if full maybe quite noisy and I'd agree a designated quiet room maybe of benefit.

Handy for the Twice Brewed Inn and it's gin menu and own brewed ales, signposted from the hostel car park but in the pitch black we must've took a wrong turning so stuck to the slightly longer walk along the road.

Attached National Landscape Centre was a tad disappointing but that's not for this review.

Loved it and will be back, maybe with the grandkids in tow.

It's small and fabulous with friendly staff.

Brilliant location for exploring Hadrians Wall or as a Stop over if pushing north of the wall

Fantastic new build. Apart from a fire door being wedged open (wedge removed and reported) this is a very safe building. Better en suite room than many three star hotels I have stayed in and a mighty fine breakfast. Security was first class. I have frequently stayed at the YH this one replaced. It was falling apart. Luckily the new one has great staff just like the old one. Well done. I will be back.

User

Brilliant place! Learned a lot of new things!

User

Beautiful building, disappointing you cannot take dogs up to the roof or inside and we had to sit outside to eat our lunch which was very nice but spoilt by people coming out to smoke.

As a brand new (only been open for 3 weeks after a total rebuid) Youth Hostel everything was how you would expect, clean and fresh looking. My party of 8 aging bikers up from wildest Yorkshire were greeted by the amazing Harriette Muller the ever cheerful duty manager (she needs a pay rise). The security was good with card entry to both rooms and the bedroom area. The dining area and seating areas were OK and could cater for a large crowd but there wasn't and 'quiet' rooms where you could sit and read in peace. The YHA seems to be changing its direction in reducing the size of the self catering kitchens having only token facilities in comparison to the YHA kitchen providing Hostel food. The self catering kitchen was far too small considering the numbers wanting to use it to cook and also store their food. That said, the cooked breakfast provided by the Hostel was very good.

All in all a very good hostel with excellent staff.

A beautiful and sympathetic to the countryside building. Friendly and helpful staff. Great walks along Hadrians Wall. Comfortable and secure accomodation. A lot of very interesting things to see in the adjoining visitor centre. A lovely green planted roof covers the whole building.

User

7 of us stayed Friday night after a 48 mile bike ride. We were all very impressed with the accommodation, layout and building and especially the hot showers which we definitely needed as you can imagine!! Room 111 I stayed in.

Would definitely stay there again if cycling in the area - keep up the good work!!

User

This is a stunning hostel, in a fantastic location for walking Hadrian's Wall. Clean, bright very modern. The rooms are great mostly on suite and fantastic showers. A few teething problems, self catering kitchen does not work, lack of space, poorly stocked with utensils so bring your own. No facility to re cycle within the kitchen area. These issues could easily be resolved.

Our main complaint is the fact there was no drying room everyone was drying soaking wet gear in the main bedrooms which will cause problems long term.... hope this gets sorted as it could be an issue for just about every walker, cyclist or wet tourist. Otherwise a fantastic place to stay with friendly helpful staff within the hostel and visitor centre I would highly recommend this hostel.

User

Nice and clean rooms, brekky quite good and twice brewed nextcdoor for a dinner and a pint.

User

Lovely weekend there with 37 members of Bradford walking CHA club good food ,staff excellent , bedrooms much bigger than normal and so warm as weather freezing loved the rooftop garden pity it was snowing , wanted to star fade will be back

User

Loved the modern decor and the new bunks are fantastic all clean and lovely staff decent self catering kitchen great choice of whiskeys at the bar but constant music in main area is grating I can ignore the tv screens in a quite corner but the music is unnecessarily constant.

User

It's an excellent place to stop off at if you visiting the roman forts/wall. Good tourist information and place to stop off for refreshments and comfort breaks.

User

As a group of four walking hadrians wall we pre booked the sill. After a 17 mile walk we arrived, checked in and found this place to be friendly, clean and modern. You can get a hot meal here but when we arrived kitchen was closed so we visited the pub next door which does very good food. Breakfast here I would describe as ok, I would perhaps like a little extra to fuel the next stage of our walk. Our only real moan was that our onsuite shower was very smelly to the point of unusable, but we did find the communal showers to be clean and pleasant. I would stay here again and if you are walking the wall it's a pleasant place to stay, and If you do get wet there is also a drying room that can be used which we found quite handy.
