York Nurturing Community - Ync

About York Nurturing Community - Ync

The York Nurturing Community (YNC), is a registered ‘start up’ group with the York Centre for Voluntary Service (CVS)
Having launched our six month pilot initiative during 2016, we at the YNC are continuing to develop and expand our pop-up interactive community Hub and Café devoted to supporting and promoting community cohesion and wellbeing.

The YNC comprises local parents who aim to create a relaxed, family-friendly meeting space which (in the absence of a traditional village) will provide opportunities for community members to connect and experience a tangible sense of ‘community’. The emphasis will be on nurturing community well-being through a focus on healthy eating, social interaction and learning.

The pop-up café runs on Thursdays and Fridays at the Super Sustainable Centre in Derwenthorpe serving a range of delicious, home-cooked and allergy friendly food, comprising easy-to-serve light snacks and hearty soups. This is prepared by our chef who is licensed to prepare food at her home.

Our sessions incorporate information hubs and free workshops conducted by professionals who have offered to share their expertise on a voluntary basis.
The activities chosen represent a range of family-appropriate interests, such as drama, gardening & nature, nutrition, arts & crafts, singing, post-natal classes, toddler group, mindfulness and yoga as a starting point to connecting members of the York community.

Discussions on social media, confirmed in further research by YNC (including a survey of 140 respondents and a review of research findings published on the City of York Council website) indicate that York families have identified a genuine need and desire to participate in a community-building endeavour of this nature. We welcome you to join us.

Tomorrow we pay homage to what the YNC kitchen does best - curries!
The lovely Claire will be putting out Kebob curry, Spinach & Coconut Dhall, & some Mint Raita & Crispy Onions for toppings! We received an enormous amount of Pita Bread recently so instead of the traditional Naan you can enjoy your curries with some lovely warm Pita Breads.
Children most welcome, there will be some toys out to distract them while you eat and you can grab a Kid's Platter from the cafe (Sand...wich, Crisps & Fruit) for just £2 if needed.
So come along for a feed and a chat. Pay what you want or what you can.
Food served at 12:45. See you all there!

YNC found information on the York Community Recylcling Fund which might be of interest to you, given your fantastic work to reduce food waste, the closing date is the 20.01.17? It might be worth a read...Joanne, Derwenthorpe Manager

Wonderful project! Me and my toddler love it. He has a good play, I have a drink and a sit down and we both have a hot healthy meal. Pay as you feel aspect means I can be flexible with what I pay as finances allow and makes it really inclusive.

We visited for the first time last Thursday and couldn't believe we hadn't been before! The food was excellent - so good that I was willing to give my 8 month old her first cookie (dairy and sugar free)! We had the lovely dhal. My vegetarian husband was also very impressed and enjoyed the vegan chocolate cake.

We originally came to attend Nappy Library but was impressed that there were play provisions suitable for my daughter (including a ball pool, sensory toys and some lovely books that she read with her Daddy) and a number of different activities going on. I ended up staying for the Nurturing You and Baby group which I found very refreshing and welcoming.

The room can seem quite small, especially when busy but I think this adds to the community atmosphere. Only negative (and this is a small niggle) was that it was very warm up there and my daughter and I struggled a little with the heat.

We will definitely be returning and hope to see this as a permanent feature.

We have a wonderful time at playgroup on Thursday mornings. Lovely caring friendly place to be. A big thank you. Katie

We had a lovely morning, a great space for all 3 of my kids to roam. The food was delicious and Emily was very welcoming. Thank you x

My daughter and I have been going here for the past few months and we've loved it. The volunteers who run the cafe and workshops are friendly, as are all those visiting, the food is fantastic - it's so nice to have cake options for us as we are dairy free. Sadly I'm back to work on Thursdays from next week so we've had our last visit for a while, we'll both miss it.

User

Lovely friendly place with great food. What a wonderful initiative!

User

Love this playgroup, so friendly and well run. Nice to have a lovely group this side of town as well!

User

Just been to Toddler Time at YNC. Really lovely vibe, friendly people and fantastic premises. All run by volunteers - exciting to see what is being created here

User

I was really apprehensive about joining mother and baby groups. The Nurturing You and Baby Group for mums and pre-mobiles babies has been really welcoming and supportive. It's a pity I won't be able to join from December.

User

Friendly and welcoming with lovely food.

User

Fantastic activities and lovely food! It's definitely been a highlight of our summer

User

A lovely, friendly environment for children and their carers. A great selection of toys and delcious food too. Highly recommended!

User

A great place for both youngsters and adults. The food is amazing and the pay as you feel vibe means it is accessible to all whatever your budget!

We went today ( my second time). Felicity loved it walking around lots of toys for her to play with, and food for her. Really suggest you visit it's a great local venture especially to support Mums and Dads of young pre school children( I think)
