Another Mallard duckling arrival. He has settled in well with our other orphan ducklings at the Sanctuary and will be released back to the wild once fully grown. With thanks to Christine for volunteering to collect this little one from Pontefract last week.

Today is the final day you can nominate us to win this fantastic prize of a brand new Brinsea incubator for our casualties.
This is free to enter, and will only take a few moments of your time. Please, help support our work with injured wildlife by nominating us by the end of today. Thank you!

Our volunteers were able to assist this young swan last week, that had been carrying a hook and line near Warrington. Thankfully there were no injuries, and the bird was released immediately back to the wild after the fishing tackle was removed. With thanks to Amy (pictured) for contacting us to help.

Now 9pm and just settling in what I hope to be the last casualties of the day to arrive in at the Sanctuary, which included a Magpie, a Mallard duckling and this injured swan rescued from Lincoln, all arriving within the last hour. Another busy day.

User

These two fluffy bundles of joy arrived at the Sanctuary last week. Their story however, is a rather sad one.
A farmer near Messingham, North Lincolnshire, began lifting down bales of straw with a tractor, and whilst working unknowingly pulled down a Tawny Owl nest situated some 50ft at the height of the bales.
One baby was crushed under the wheels of the tractor before the other two were noticed. After a good length of time, no adults returned to the site, and out of concer...n the Owlets were becoming hungry, our organisation was called to assist.
By the time we arrived, the torrential rains had soaked the Owlets, both were freezing, unresponsive and close to death. On the journey back to the Sanctuary, we were able to gently warm both up and slowly dry them out in the footwell of our rescue vehicle under some heat.
Several days later, and their transformation is fantastic. Both are eating well, gaining weight and growing by the day. These two will be reared at the Sanctuary before soft release back to the wild in a few months time.

Must be dinner time for this little hog 😋 This one arrived with us recently, having been found in a poor dehydrated state at Cave Castle Hotel, East Yorkshire. With thanks to Jade and Dave for collecting him up and getting him the help required - he’s already feeling much better!

User

The young swan pictured in the foreground arrived on Thursday this week from Hull, having flown into overhead cables. In with some of our other recovering swan casualties for company, we expect this bird to make a return back to the wild in the future.

User

A nice morning at the Sanctuary, busy pumping out and scrubbing clean our rehabilitation ponds, before refilling with fresh water. This is carried out at least twice a week and is most appreciated by our casualties!

User

One of our latest arrivals, rescued yesterday morning from the Canal at Thorne, South Yorkshire. The bird had been observed not feeding for a few days before we were called to assist.
No obvious problems on first inspection, so an x-ray was required. A small hook was later removed from the throat of the bird, thankfully without the need for invasive surgery given its position. The bird is doing well with us and should make a full recovery.

User

These two little cuties arrived late last night from Lincoln, after being found alone and covered in mud. They’ll be reared here with our other orphan Mallard ducklings.

User

Nice to be able release this young chap just now at Doncaster Lakeside, rescued earlier this evening after crash landing in a garden in South Yorkshire. No injuries, so the bird could immediately return to a more suitable place in the wild with some other swans for company.

User

This chap arrived in on Bank Holiday Monday, after being rescued from the side of a busy main road in Hunslet, Leeds. We suspect given his injuries he may have been clipped be a vehicle. Now nicely settled into one of our intensive care pens at the Sanctuary.

User

One of those busy days... And yes, we do get some funny looks on the motorway now and again!

User

We would like to wish all of our supporters a very Happy Easter 🐣

User

Four more swans ready for release back to the wild recently, after their various stays and treatments here at the Sanctuary.

User

This young swan was collected by our volunteers a week ago from Yeadon Tarn near Leeds, West Yorkshire. The swan is incredibly light, was showing disinterest in food and he has since begun treatment for lead poisoning. A week on, and he’s progressing well here in our care at the Sanctuary.

User

Another swan was brought to us earlier this week, rescued from the Canal at Woodlesford, Leeds.
The bird passed into the lock, and was crushed between a boat and the lock gates. Amazingly there are no fractures but the bird is very badly bruised and currently is unable to stand.

User

Brilliant video!

User

We rescued this chap found injured in undergrowth yesterday, after receiving a call for assistance from RSPB Fairburn Ings near Castleford, West Yorkshire. We aren’t too sure exactly how this bird came by these injuries, but he’s very unwell and rather subdued. We hope he will respond to our treatment and care over the coming days.

Yorkshire Swan & Wildlife Hospital rescued a stray cygnet today from Bingley St Ives. They arrived quickly and took it, so it could be released in a safer environment. The resident swans were attacking this cygnet. Thank you x

User

Want to say a very Big Thank Dan for traveling to Scunthorpe to help 2 adult swan's and there 8 cygnets they are now back safe on the pond excellent work dan xx

User

Two ground breaking things where achieved today. A very serious case of Angel Wing in both wings was cured and a cygnet was re-introduced to its family after almost 2 weeks. This was all due to the dedication from Dan and the Yorkshire Swan Rescue team.

X3 340 mile roundtrips to help a Cygnet to have a life. I think that speaks for itself really.

Once again, Dan and the team amazed me!

Thank you from the bottom of the heart guys. You have made a swan family and community really happy!

These people are the very best I have come across in wildlife and animal rescue and care. They genuinely care and concentrate on looking after the vulnerable wildlife, and I am so thankful they are around to look after our swans.

User

The YSRH have recently been treating the swans in our village and we are so grateful to them. They give up their time to look after many species that have been injured through no fault of their own. They are caring, selfless angels. Fingers crossed that they receive donations enough to enable them to continue their work for many years to come. Thank you again YSRH

User

Thanks so much to these wonderful people who came out last evening at 7.30 to catch and relocate the swan and ducks at the Roundhay park bywash. Not an easy task as location was a difficult one im sure. The swan had been there for 4 days with his mate waiting patiently on the lake. The ducklings had been there for over 6 weeks with no response from the park or RSPCA. So big hugs to this amazing team of caring people.

User

Thanks for coming out to relocate the family of swans that decided to take up residence in our arena, yesterday, wasn't here myself but hubby commented on how knowledgeable and professional you were, thanks for all you do

User

Thank you to the volunteers who had to make a return visit to locate a young swan on the Leeds Liverpool Canal today. The swan, part of a brood that my wife and I have watched grow over the past year, had a fishing lure attached to its beak and when we first spotted it late Monday evening seemed very distressed. The problem faced by the team trying to help was that the swan was still very much mobile and on the move. It took some concerted effort to locate it by the sound of it. Well done to all concerned! Top effort.

User

Swan under nets at local fisheries .. Dan was professional and non judgemental, I would definitely recommend and will support this charity

User

Quick to message with advice on what to do with a Swan I found stood in the road and now hes back on the river safe where he belongs.

User

Not only did the gang cure Angel Wing and all the benefits that come with it for the cygnet, (life). They also travelled over 900 miles to collect after 2 attempts and also bring the cygnet back to release where he was hatched. It was a magical experience to be involved in and will stay with a lot of us for a long time.

Words fail me as I do not have the vocabulary to praise these people enough. Dan even informed us he is on stand by if needed.

All on a very limited budget. WOW

User

Knowledgeable, caring people who love Wildlife, they make a huge difference.

The volunteers give a lot of their time and effort for the Love of Animals.

Without the Swan Rescue Hospital and Wildlife Sanctuary at Barlow, Selby this country would be a sadder place.

User

I think Dan and the volunteers do such an amazing job to help rescue sick or injured wildlife, not just swans, and nurse them back health and release them back to the wild where they belong.

User

I have only met Dan once and very briefly, but can honestly say that I would be hard pushed to meet a nicer, more genuine person. He is also so talented at what he does. Will be eternally grateful for his help

User

I contacted the volunteers at Yorkshire Swan Rescue this evening due to a family of lost swans who had become stranded along a main road for several hours. They were very prompt with their reply, incredibly helpful and arrived quickly. A happy ending with swans safely back home! A huge thank you. Great work

User

Excellent and speedy response to my call about the injured young swan by the roadside near Temple Hirst last night. Even interrupted his evening plans to do this! Highly recommend calling YSRH for any wildlife emergencies. Brilliant.

User

Delighted that YSRH came to the rescue of a cygnet and after treatment for a couple of weeks it has been successfully released back with its original family. I have followed the progress through a local group in Newton-le-Willows(merseyside not Yorkshire NLW!!) and its wonderful that organisations like this offer the help needed. thank you.

User

Dan is the most dedicated person I know who will go above and beyond for any animal in distress and will always give a creature a chance. He's also very generous with his knowledge and his time to teach people about the creatures in his care and wildlife in general. I'm lucky to be able to help and assist this amazing charity :)

User

Came promptly to the rescue of a family of swans stranded amidst heavy traffic when no other organisation would assist.
