Latest: A bird strike to an easyJet plane taking off from Southend Airport this afternoon caused the pilot to divert and make an emergency landing at Stansted Airport.
Flight EZY7435 took off from Southend Airport at 16:45 but one of the engines is understood to have been hit by a large bird - now thought to be a seagull.
Local residents near to the airport report hearing a “horrendous noise” as the Airbus plane took off and tried to climb.
... The pilot quickly declared an emergency landing was necessary and diverted immediately to Stansted where the plane landed safely.
Lucy Chapman was one of the passengers on the flight and was in a group of 11 women travelling to Marbella for a hen do. She told Your Southend: “The take off was very noisy, the roof was banging around and the plane was vibrating. EasyJet have now told us to go home after three hours of waiting at Stansted because they can’t get another flight!”
Another passenger, Hannah Johnson, said: “Once the bird hit, the engine noise was horrific and the plane was shaking. It happened almost immediately. We had been told whilst sitting in the plane before taking off that there were birds in the way.”
A spokesperson for easyJet said: “The flight was diverted to Stansted airport due to a bird hitting the plane. We now plan to refuel and continue the flight. The crew will be keeping passengers up to date on the situation.”
UPDATE: A spokesperson for easyJet Operations Control said: “Due to high demand in the Stansted area, we have not been able to source any onward travel for passengers on this flight this evening. Passengers should arrange their own transport such as a taxi, train or bus and claim their expenses back through the easyJet customer service team. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.”
