If you have never made your own fish fingers ๐ŸŸ then get to it. They are so easy, great one to get childen involved with and much tastier than shop bought ๐Ÿ˜‹. Just dip your fish (cut to size) in flour, beaten egg and then breadcrumbs. Fry in a little oil until golden on all sides. You can also switch it up and use oily fish (e.g. salmon) for the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and wholemeal breadcrumbs for added fibre. As its Children's Mental Health Week let's talk about long-c...hain omega-3...
๐Ÿง  LC omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain development and health
๐ŸŸ You and your kids can get LC omega-3 fatty acids from eating a portion of oily fish a week (e.g. salmon, trout, sardines, mackerel)
๐Ÿ’Š If you or your kids don't eat fish, I would recommend supplements but watch out a LOT of kids omega-3 supplements are based on flax seed oil which needs to be converted by the body to long-chain omega-3 and the conversion rate is very low ๐Ÿ˜”. Get in touch if you need some advice on which ones to choose or how to incorporate more oily fish into your weekly meals.

Food fun ๐ŸŽ: Get the kids involved with the food prep! It may have taken him 20 minutes to peel an apple but he had great fun doing it. I remember at school being set a challenge to see how long we could get the apple peel. I'm pleased to say my skills have improved since then and I won hands down on this occasion, to the great wonderment of my 6 yr old ๐Ÿ™Œ. Good one for potatoes too ๐Ÿฅ” - if you trust your kids with a peeler ๐Ÿ™ˆ (wasn't an activity for the 2 yr old, although she had fun playing with the peel)! What food fun are you having in your kitchen this weekend?

Phew! I'm kinda glad Sugar Awareness Week is over. Some of the unevidence-based claims about how detrimental sugars are have been doing my nut in ๐Ÿคฏ. Dont get me wrong, I'm all for low sugar options but some so-called 'experts' have been taking it a step too far - spouting ways in which sugars wreck havoc with our bodies, which just aren't backed up by science. Yes, we need to reduce our intake of free sugars and these sugars are best avoided for children under 4 (to help deve...

Sugar awareness week: ๐Ÿฌ Sugar is not the root of all evil but it is something, as a nation, we need to reduce the intake of (in our diets and those of our children). For my 121s I often find children are eating half of their maximum daily free sugars in breakfast alone. What are free sugars? Sugars added to foods by the manufacturer, cook or consumer and includes syrups, honey and fruit juices.
๐Ÿค”What are the breakfast culprits?
๐ŸฅฃSugary cereals
... ๐ŸฅคFruit juice
๐ŸฎFlavoured milk drinks
๐ŸซChocolate spreads
๐ŸฅœPeanut butter with added sugars
๐ŸฏJams and honey
How can you help minimise sugar intakes?
๐ŸฅฃNot all cereals are bad and cereals can make very useful contributions to micronutrient and fibre intakes. They are also really convenient for a quick breakfast and are a favourite in our house. Opt for high fibre, lower sugar cereals such as wheat biscuits (e.g. Weetabix, Shredded Wheat), malted wholewheat cereal (e.g. Shreddies) or no added sugar muesli or porridge.
๐ŸฅคTry to give whole fruit rather than fruit juice. If you wish to occasional give fruit juice, dilute with water and give no more than 150 ml. Plain milk or water are the best drink options.
๐Ÿž Spreads for breads - no added sugar and salt nut butters and reduced salt yeast extract (e.g. Marmite) are good low sugar options.
What's your favourite breakfast?

Rice & Arsenic: Arsenic is naturally present in water, air and soil, and is absorbed by some food crops as they grow ๐ŸŒฑ. Rice can contain more arsenic compared to other crops due to how it is grown (in paddy fields). Is this anything to worry about? Should I avoid giving rice to my baby? ๐Ÿš Rice is a starchy carbohydrate and a good source of energy. It is also super versatile and can be served with so many different dishes. It can be found in breakfast cereals, rice cakes and ...other packaged snacks. It can also feature as a dessert - rice pudding! Its shape and soft consistency means it is often included in weaning foods. ๐Ÿ› Safety experts do not consider that the arsenic exposure from eating rice a few times a week constitutes a health risk. Like with everything in our diet and that of our children's, it is a good idea to vary it up a bit and include a wide range of starchy carbohydrates for different meals and snacks over the course of a day and over the week. When providing solid foods to you baby, consider other types of grains in addition to rice. ๐Ÿฅ›RICE MILK should not be given to children under the age of 5 years. This is because the level of arsenic is more concentrated in rice milk compared to other rice products. ๐Ÿฝ How to prepare boiled rice to reduce the level of arsenic it containsโ€ฆ.
Wash basmati rice in a sieve under the tap before cooking
Cook rice in plenty of water (6:1 ratio of water to rice)
Drain rice into a sieve and run boiling water through it before serving
๐Ÿ› Did you find this info useful? What are your favourite rice dishes? We love chilli con carne and tray baked chicken and rice in our household!

A cheeky pitstop ๐Ÿ inbetween clients and weaning workshop this aft. It's never a relaxing experience eating out with little ones is it?! Especially when they won't be contained by a high chair ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ! Nice to have a change of scenery though and thanks @thelionsdenhaslemere for providing books to keep this one entertained!

User

This one has ditched her high chair, she wants to be like everyone else in a proper chair ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. At just over 2 yrs old she has lasted longer than her big brother in the high chair so can't complain. Have you got a determined little soul in your family?

Good to see a wide selection of nitrite-free bacon in our local shop ๐Ÿ‘. Nitrites have been linked to increased risk of colon cancer so it's great that this innovation can now be found in many of the supermarkets. Bacon is high in salt and saturated fat though and this nitrite-free bacon is still classed as a processed meat so let's not go crazy ๐Ÿ˜œ! However, if you are making pigs in blankets this Christmas ๐ŸŽ„, nitrite-free bacon is a good option to choose!

Homemade stir-fry sauce suitable for the whole family ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ. Why are shop-bought stir-fry sauces always high in sugar or salt (or both)!? Here is an easy tasty thai sauce recipe, low in sugar and salt ๐Ÿ‘, whizzed up in seconds using a hand blender:
Garlic clove
2cm piece fresh ginger, sliced
... 1 tsp turmeric
4 spring onions, trimmed
1 tbsp peanut butter (no added salt or sugar)
4 dried kaffir lime leaves
Half bunch of fresh coriander
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp low-salt soy sauce
50 ml coconut cream
Splash of water to loosen, if needed.
For grown-ups you can also add in a fresh red chilli ๐ŸŒถ. Enjoy! Have you got a favourite stir-fry sauce?
