About Zaha Hadid Architects

We work at all scales and in all sectors. We create transformative cultural, corporate, residential and other spaces that work in synchronicity with their surroundings.

Zaha Hadid Architects Description

Zaha Hadid, founding partner of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and innovative projects builds on over thirty years of revolutionary experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design.
Working with senior office partner Patrik Schumacher, Hadid’s interest is in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as the practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems that lead to experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. Such a process often results in unexpected and dynamic architectural forms.
The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome, BMW Central Building in Leipzig and Guangzhou Opera House are excellent demonstrations of the practice’s quest for complex, dynamic space. Currently, the practice is working on a multitude of projects including; the KAPSARC Research Centre in Riyadh, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games, High-Speed Train Stations in Naples and Durango, the CMA CGM Head Office tower in Marseille and urban master-plans in Cairo, Istanbul, China, Singapore and the Middle East.
Zaha Hadid Architects continues to be a global leader in pioneering research and design investigation. Collaborations with artists, designers, engineers and clients that lead their industries have advanced the practice’s diversity and knowledge, whilst the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies have aided the realization of fluid, dynamic and therefore complex architectural structures.

Zaha Hadid Gallery: Pop-up Exhibition, New York City - Nov 8th until Dec 2018 at 514 West 28th Street, NYC.
The Zaha Hadid Gallery, London showcases the collections of Zaha Hadid Design as well as exhibitions with a focus on Zaha Hadid Architects’ archive and research, in addition to the work of emerging designers.
... Until December 2018, the Zaha Hadid Gallery presents a Pop-up exhibition in the new space for art at 514 West 28th Street, New York - on the ground floor of ZHA’s acclaimed 520 West 28th residential condominium building in Manhattan.
Zaha Hadid Architects redefined architecture for the 21st century with a repertoire of projects that have captured imaginations across the globe. Receiving the highest honours from civic, professional and academic institutions worldwide, ZHA is one of the world’s most consistently inventive architectural studios—and has been for four decades.
The works displayed at the New York Pop-up explore the studio’s ongoing experimentation into innovative new methods of design and construction to generate geometries defined by light-weight material utilisation and structural performance.
This investigative approach is evident in each of the works presented; demonstrating the studio’s collaborative, research-led methodology where furniture and product designs are inter-related with their research and experimentation of new materials and manufacturing technologies at an architectural scale.

KnitCandela is thin, sinuous concrete shell built on ultra-lightweight knitted formwork.
Installed at MUAC in Mexico City as part of Zaha Hadid Architects’ first exhibition in Latin America, KnitCandela is an experimental structure designed by ZHCODE that pays homage to the architect & engineer Félix Candela—reimagining his inventive concrete shell structures through the introduction of new computational design methods and innovative KnitCrete knitted formwork technology.
Kn...itCrete enables the realisation of a wide range of anticlastic geometries. With this cable-net and fabric formwork system, expressive, freeform concrete surfaces can now be constructed efficiently, without the need for complex moulds. KnitCandela’s thin, double-curved concrete shell with a surface area of almost 50 sq.m. and weighing more than 5 tonnes, was applied on a KnitCrete formwork of only 55 kg. The knitted fabric of the formwork system was carried to Mexico from Switzerland in a suitcase.
KnitCrete is an innovative material-saving, labour-reducing & cost-effective formwork system to case double-curved geometries in concrete. Developed at ETH Zurich by the Block Research Group in collaboration with the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Digital Fabrication.
Designed to be constructed within a tight schedule, restricted space and minimal budget, KnitCandela demonstrates the rapid evolution of digital design & fabrication to the challenges faced by the construction industry, and integrates digital fabrication with the skills of traditional craftsmanship and construction methods.
Architecture Extrapolated (R-Ex) managed KnitCandela’s construction as part of its work integrating digital technologies in building trades in Mexico.

Final week to purchase Zaha Hadid Design's limited-edition t-shirt for The Childhood Trust
SODA Studio and Everpress have united to run a new campaign to raise money and awareness for The Childhood Trust – a fundraising and grant-making group working with grassroots charities to help alleviate the impact of child poverty in London.
The project has been set-up under the theme of ‘sanctuary’, with a number of London’s designers, illustrators and architectural practices creating... one-off artworks that will be printed on limited edition t-shirts.
With all designers giving their time for free, 100% of profits from the t-shirts will go directly to The Childhood Trust, helping them to support vulnerable children living in poverty in London. Creatives from across the city have worked on t-shirt designs, depicted through a variety of mediums, including typography, illustration and photography.
T-shirts will be available from SODA Studio and Zaha Hadid Design; artists Corin Kennington and Jonny Gent; designers Hato, Pentagram, Lovers and Here Design; illustrators Inari Sirola, Jamie Edler and Lawrence Slater; photographer Lewis Khan; and architects DK-CM.
Informed by Zaha Hadid’s paintings for the 1992 exhibition design of “The Great Utopia” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the t-shirt by Zaha Hadid Design conveys Hadid’s early influence by the Russian avant-garde, whose radical new ideas to revitalize society and create a sanctuary for all she so championed. Hadid set out to build their revolution.
The t-shirt by Zaha Hadid Design can be purchased online until 1 November here: https://everpress.com/sanctuary/zaha-hadi d-design

Elevator ride at Morpheus, Macau.
Morpheus combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with innovative engineering and formal cohesion. Its design resolves the hotel’s many complex programmes within a single cohesive envelope housing 770 guest rooms & suites, gaming rooms, lobby atrium, restaurants, spa and rooftop pool.
ZHA was commissioned to build the hotel in 2012. At that time, foundations were already in place of a condominium tower that did not progress.... ZHA designed the Morpheus as a vertical extrusion of the existing abandoned foundations; using this rectangular footprint to define a 40-storey building of two internal vertical circulation cores connected at podium and roof levels where the many guest amenities were required.
Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the atrium and define the hotel’s dramatic internal public spaces. In-between these voids, a series of bridges create unique spaces for the hotel’s restaurants, bars and guest lounges by renowned chefs including Alain Ducasse & Pierre Herme.
Working with Buro Happold Engineering, ZHA designed the building’s exoskeleton to optimise the interiors.

520 West 28th wins Engineering News-Record (ENR) 2018 New York’s Best Project Award
520 West 28th wins the Engineering News-Record (ENR) 2018 New York’s Best Project Award in the Residential & Hospitality category.
The ENR Awards’ judging panel examined safety performance, innovations, challenges, as well as design and construction quality to select the year’s best projects.
... There is a powerful urban dynamic between the streets of New York and the High Line, a layered civic realm that has developed over generations and in many iterations. 520 West 28th conveys this contextual relationship, applying new ideas and concepts to create the latest evolution of the site’s rich history.
The split levels of the design define varied living spaces and echo the multiple layers of civic space on 28th Street and the High Line.
These split levels are expressed within the interlocking chevrons of 520 West 28th’s hand-crafted steel façade which carries the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past; its detailed workmanship continues the venerable tradition within New York’s historic architecture of enhancing the public realm.
Designed and constructed with a practiced understanding of material qualities and manufacturing techniques, the façade conveys the attention to detail evident throughout 520 West 28th—brushed and tinted by hand to resonate with the adjacent structures of the High Line and its neighbourhood.
Within an established community of over 350 art galleries that has seen the High Line’s transformation from abandoned freight rail line to public park, 520 West 28th embodies a commitment to uphold the distinctive character of its neighbourhood; creating a building with its own architectural presence, yet very much of its surroundings.
520 West 28th is also shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2018 Awards and the 2018 ABB Leaf Awards.
