About Zeroplus Theatre Co.

A theatre in education production company that works in collaboration with schools & arts venues, touring theatre for young people, schools & the community

Zeroplus Theatre Co. Description

Founded in 2008 as a partnership between zeroculture and The Drum, zeroPlus Theatre is a Theatre In Education (TiE) company that brings creative, dynamic and high quality productions firing the imagination and provoking the minds of young audiences.

Our work is based on original storytelling from the British South Asian sector, that adds nurturing perspectives to the national education curriculum. We use sensory, visual dramatic devices with evocative music to create simple engaging and accessible theatre. Our stories offer new, fresh and different perspectives to historical subjects as well as issues currently challenged by community cohesions. We wish to impress upon young minds our rich shared heritages that make up and resonate the cultural diversity of our communities.

Based at The Drum in Birmingham, we tour nationally and internationally to schools, theatre venues, community centres, places of worship, festivals, museums and melas. We make our work with a capability to adapt to any appropriate space.

MY GRANDAD & I... opens this morning
Our long awaited new show opens this morning at EBN Referral Unit in Birmingham after weeks of rehearsal at Nishkam Centre, The Edge and Naseby Youth Centre. We thank them all for their ‘in kind’ space.
My Grandad & I ..... is a devised theatre in education exploring identity, faith symbolism and issues of ethnicity. The story illustrates the historical discrimination against the ‘dastaar’ (turban) as worn by Sikhs when they first migrate...d to the UK during the 1950’s and 60’s, and the various protests that prompted a campaign to change the law. Discriminating against the wearing of the turban was not liable to legal prosecution before 1983, despite the Race Relation Act of 1976.
The character of Grandad encapsulates various historical figures who were at the forefront of campaigns for the acceptance of the dastaar, such as Sohan Singh Jolly, Tarsem Singh Sandhu, Sewa Singh Mandla and many many more.
Devised in association with pupils from. Cranford Community College, Queensbridge School, Starbank and Small Heath.
Directed by Ajay Dattani Produced by Fateha Begum Design by Ajay Dattani & Suneeda Maruthiyil
Cast: Amirul Hussain, Roni Syed, Ahmed Ali
Thanks to Purdy Bhogal, Oakland Young People’s Centre, Surinder Kaur Sandal ( Naseby Youth Centre, Nishkam Centre.

As the world commemorates the centenary of the Battle of the Somme … http://www.empirefaithwar.com/ … pay tribute to the Sikhs of WW1 who played such a disproportionately large role in the Great War. From the Somme and the blood soaked trenches of the Western Front to the deserts and heat of Africa and the Middle East they gained a reputation as fearless and fearsome fighters.
