1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Description

A reference to fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent, the title of 1-54 establishes the parameters of the fair’s ethos: as a platform that strives to represent multiplicity and showcase the diversity of contemporary African art and cultural production on an international stage.

1-54 was initiated by Touria El Glaoui in 2013 in London, the first edition of 1-54 in New York was held in 2015 and 1-54 Marrakech will be launched in February 2018.

1-54 is accompanied by an educational and artistic programme and includes lectures, film screenings and panel debates featuring leading international curators, artists and art experts.

The wait is over! You can now listen online to the recordings of all talks from the latest edition of FORUM at 1-54 New York 2018.
Curated by Omar Berrada, the fair's talks programme titled 'Living Room' invited artists, curators, writers and other cultural producers to make more living room by exploring the political potential of intimacy.

Thank you to all visitors for the continuous support and enthusiasm! And a special thank you to all our partners, galleries, artists and cultural contributors. Watch our closing video below, with Jack Bell Gallery, Retro Africa, Huberty & Breyne Gallery and Afronova. See you next year!

Hyperallergic - "There are only 21 galleries represented at the fair, so I initially felt that I had the time and space to contemplate work (in contrast to Frieze with its armada of about 180 galleries). Yet so many stories behind the works are so captivating as I prepared to write this, I realized I would not be able to tell them all. This is a welcome problem to have: to be overcome by so much beauty I’m not sure how to share it all."

The Independent - "The massive vehicle from Apartheid-era South Africa has been brought into the US by artist Ralph Ziman, who said his efforts to reclaim the vehicle and turn it into art were spurred by memories of the vehicle’s dark past in his home country — and that the vehicle used to terrorise tribes decades ago has a particular resonance with a dark present in modern America’s increasingly militarized police community."
