Alongside improving lighting, providing contacts and a listening ear, the DO is ideally placed to help a patient with low vision explore the wide range of magnifiers that are available. Once you have an idea of the main issues that a person faces, you need to start considering solutions. Have a good sample set for patients with poor vision to try. Talk to suppliers about additional training in LVAs for the team. Magnifiers are now designed for real people taking into account limited movements due to strokes etc.

A free resource pack for eyecare and health professionals containing valuable information on sight loss support services, charities, equipment and referral pathways has been produced by Visualise Training and Consultancy with the support of Thomas Pocklington Trust.
The pack complements the ‘Seeing Beyond the Eyes’ CET workshops currently touring the UK which raise awareness of the difficulties faced by patients diagnosed with irreversible sight loss. It contains valuable inf...ormation on local sight loss charities, eye clinic liaison officers (ECLO), low vision assessment services and Habilitation Workers. It also lists national organisations supporting people with sight loss and condition specific charities.
Daniel Williams of Visualise said “It is vital patients with sight loss are referred immediately to sight loss services that can enable their independence and help them deal with a difficult time in their life. However Optical professionals can’t refer if they don’t know who they are referring hence why we have created such a resource pack and training roadshow. "
The pack can be downloaded free of charge from the resources area of buff.ly/2K7Xx1q

The Macular Society will hold its third Professional Conference in October. Tickets are now available for the event, ‘Excellence in Patient Support’, which takes place on Tuesday 16 October at Conference Aston, Aston University, Birmingham.
The conference is open to all staff working in the eye care sector. It will focus on the latest in macular treatments, NICE guidelines, the patient experience of the eye clinic and best practice.
Attendees will hear from a wide range of le...ading experts, including top ophthalmologists and researchers. There will also be a small group of exhibitors throughout the day, giving delegates the opportunity to see the latest low vision equipment and network with other sight loss organisations and charities.
Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “Our Professional Conference has proved a huge hit for the past two years. In 2018, we’ve decided to take it on the road and hold it outside of London for the first time. Birmingham is the home of several top eye care sector events, so it’s the perfect location for this, and we’re grateful to Aston University for hosting us.
“Once again, there’s going to be a packed programme with a range of terrific speakers already confirmed and more set to follow. We’d encourage anyone interested in coming along to avoid disappointment and book their place as soon as possible.”
The Professional Conference runs from 9.15am-5pm. Tickets are £45 each and are available from the Macular Society website, https://buff.ly/2mIBgy4
For more information about the conference, please contact Jessica Murray, Macular Society professional liaison officer, on 01264 322 412 or email Jessica.M@macularsociety.org

Remember that you are not the only person who can help: a big part of low vision work can be putting people in touch with a support network. There are lots of local groups who can help the patient. Find out about your local rehabilitation services and partially sighted societies. If there is an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer at your local hospital they can be a great source of resources and contacts. Build up a folder with large print information to hand to people, but again, don’t overwhelm them at the first visit. If you want to learn more about low vision, check out the ABDO College Low Vision Honours course at

*Charity Tuesday*
DO, Maureen King has combined her two passions in life to help others. The Maggies* Charity is a cause close to Maureen's heart so, with the support of her company, Duncan & Todd, who enabled her to bid for & secure one of the 80 penguins & she got down to work. All of the penguins were 'naked' to begin with & after many hours of TLC are now all painted & placed around Tayside for everyone to see. (https://buff.ly/2KjwG7O)
The penguins will beable to be vi...ewed at their sites until 22/23 rd of September before being auctioned off to raise funds for Maggies on 24th September 2018.
Maureen's penguin is called "Freeze Frame"and Maureen says he was born out of a love for Optics & Illustration & he is designed to be friendly & approachable.
Maureen hopes that "Freeze Frame" will raise a huge amount of money for Maggies along with his 79 brothers & sisters.
*Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. Built in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Centres are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need. Maggies Centres rely on charitable giving to enable them to do their outstanding work. (buff.ly/2NULise) #NotJustaDO
