About Academy Of Medical Sciences

The Academy of Medical Sciences promotes advances in medical science and campaigns to ensure these are translated into healthcare benefits for society.

Academy Of Medical Sciences Description

Founded in 1998, the Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent body in the UK representing the diversity of medical science. Our elected Fellows – over 1000 – are central to our success. They are drawn from the fundamental biological sciences, clinical academic medicine, public and population health, health technology implementation, veterinary science, dentistry, medical and nursing care and other professions allied to medical science as well as the essential underpinning disciplines including mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, ethics, social science and the law. It is their knowledge, influence and networks that are the Academy’s most powerful assets. We are one of the UK’s five National Academies and work closely with them and our sister Academies overseas. We are also an integral part of the UK’s strong biomedical research community, working closely with funders, medical research charities, the NHS and the private sector.

At its core the Academy is:
•A champion for excellent research and researchers.
•Independent, evidence-based and authoritative in its approach.
•Proactive in identifying and responding to developments in health, society, science and policy.
•Expert and accessible in the information we provide.
•Committed to partnership and interdisciplinary engagement.

We are a signatory of the 'Concordat on openness on animal research', meaning we publish annual statistics on the use of animals in the grants that we fund.
Last year, we funded 26 grants proposing the use of animals out of a total of 160 grants awarded – which is around 16% of our grants within a twelve month period. Of these 26 awards, 19 used mice, three used rats, two used pigs, one used rabbits and one used fish.

“Every minute, every hour, every day, the definition of “room temperature” changes.
"Climate change is influencing the dynamics of human health as the many billions of microorganisms that cause disease are constantly adapting to their changing environment. We need to address the impacts of rising temperatures on human health. That is why this symposium is so timely and important.”
Professor Judith Torimiro is an Academy GCRF Networking Grant Awardee, who works at the Chantal... Biya International Reference Centre for Research on Prevention and Management of HIV/AIDS in Yaounde, Cameroon. She's just one of the researchers from many disciplines and from around the world who are gathered this week in Rio de Janeiro at the Frontiers of Development symposium.
The symposium is a collaboration between the Royal Academy of Engineering, The British Academy, The Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Last night our Fellows Professor Alison Holmes & Professor Peter Piot KCMG presented their work on emerging global infections at the House of Lords. They were invited to give the first Lords Science and Technology committee seminar, and it was fantastic to meet such an engaged and passionate selection of Peers at the event.

Fantastic (but not surprising!) to see a great selection of our women Fellows in this list of 30 women leaders in UK healthcare from Pharmaceutical Market Europe.

Less than a week left to submit abstracts for our conference for clinical academics in training. Deadline: Monday 16 July
The Academy of Medical Sciences Clinical Academics in Training Annual Conference (CATAC) is a unique cross specialty event bringing together clinical academic trainees to present their work, meet and network with senior researchers. This year we're in Edinburgh at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
There are three competitions taking place at C...ATAC 2018, each a great opportunity to gain exposure in a supportive environment:
1. Poster Competition - For all researchers with clinical qualifications.
2. Pre-Doctoral Plenary Competition - For researchers with clinical qualifications who have not yet had their PhD viva. If selected you will be asked to prepare a 10 minute oral presentation, to be followed by 5 minutes of questions from the audience.
3. Post-Doctoral Plenary Competition - For researchers with clinical qualifications who have passed their PhD. If selected you will be asked to prepare a 10 minute oral presentation, to be followed by 5 minutes of questions from the audience.

"Our son Giles was an easy baby and at first seemed to be doing really well. Then, aged two and a half, he lost his speech and turned into a wild, unmanageable toddler. This was not the ‘Terrible Twos’. The diagnosis was autism – and he never spoke again. For years I struggled with a dual load: the ups and downs of business and the mainly downward struggle to rear our profoundly vulnerable son." ow.ly/E6Au30kMai7
Dame Stephanie founded her multi-million pound freelance compu...ter programming business in 1962, with a capital of £6 from her dining room table. At the same time as her career was taking off, at home she and her partner were struggling to raise their only son.
Today, Dame Stephanie is one of the UK's largest supporters of autism care and research, having donated £68 million of her personal wealth towards establishing and supporting charities including Autistica and Autism at Kingwood, pioneering new ways of supporting people with autism.

Did someone mention the World Cup? ⚽
We support amazing people like Dr Rachel Lowe, whose research led to the release of a climate-based dengue early warning system across Brazil, 3 months ahead of the 2014 World Cup. This helped the Brazilian Ministry of Health target control actions towards areas at greater risk of dengue epidemics. Her work help ensure the safety of local and international fans gathered in the country - all 3 million of them!

"We met in London and life changed instantly – we knew very early on that we would end up spending our life together. But we then spent three years apart, when I started my group in London and he was still working in Boston. We both agree those were the toughest three years of our lives, but if anything they made us stronger."
Dr Cristina Lo Celso, a researcher in stem cell biology working on new treatments for leukemia at Imperial College London, explains how she balances he...r life and relationships alongside a career in science.
