Family run grass based dairy farming business

Alistair and Gill Cliff met at agricultural college in 1989. On leaving college Gill worked as a farm secretary on a large estate in Oxfordshire and Alistair worked as a herdsman in Staffordshire. Following a calving and mating season working and back-packing in New Zealand they moved back to Cheshire. Gill was working in accounts at Cogent and Alistair was working as a herdsman at Cheshire Farm Ice-Cream.
In 1997 they secured the tenancy of a 50 acre Cheshire County Council farm and began milking with 32 cows. Eight years later they moved to Burwardsley Hall on Bolesworth estate and expanded to 140 cows the same year Gill qualified as a chartered accountant. In 2010 they took on the tenancy of Bankhead Farm.
They now milk 430 cows plus young stock across the two farms.
The farms follow a grass based production system .
