About Alchemy Coffee, London

Roasting coffee in South London. Speciality café in City of London. La Marzocco authorised dealer.

Alchemy Coffee, London Description

Alchemy roasts and delivers fresh speciality coffee to cafés, events and connoisseurs throughout Europe. We're full service Roastery which means as well as our coffee roast and supply, we sell espresso machines and grinders, run training courses, service machines and offer a barista service for hire.

Our café is open Monday till Friday and is based on the corner of Ludgate Broadway and Carter Lane - officially 8 Ludgate Broadway EC4V 6DU

The Roastery is closed to the public except by appointment. We roast in south Wimbledon on a 12kg Probat, we have a little Probatino 1kg and a tiny Pinhalense sample roaster. We're talking batch roasting, all by hand, with a lot of love care and attention.

Have you seen our packaging closely? You may have noticed our logo on a lovely pattern, but do you know what it means and represents?
The gold pattern is made up of the triangular alchemical symbols for earth, water, air and fire - the four basic elements. Our logo is an adaptation of the alchemical symbol for gold that includes the swirls of our sister company Ristretto to show where Alchemy was born from.
The name Alchemy came from the principles of alchemists: turning som...ething ordinary into gold and creating the Elixir of life. Both of these principles, we believe, reflect what we do with coffee.
A sound and well-rounded concept if we do say so ourselves 😉

Throughout @alchemycafelondon 6 years of operation, we’ve been visited by renowned celebrities and public figures of all sorts and backgrounds. Nonetheless, the visits that we’re most proud of are of our partner coffee producers. It is in our café where we can show them the outcome of their hard work and get them to interact with customers to receive direct feedback and praise about their coffee.

The story of @alchemycafelondon begins with our desire of having a space to showcase the best coffees we could possibly get our hands on. We felt the need to give our customers that extra step to round off the Alchemy experience and to do that we needed a cafe.
With that in mind, our search for a good space began. Easier said than done but we found a space at 8 Ludgate Broadway - not the busiest area at the time, but we took the chance. So after signing the lease, it was time to design and fit the shop. After a couple of week’s work, we were ready to open on the 17th of April 2013!

Wednesday is the 6th anniversary of opening our café in 2013! Next week, we’ll be sharing some images to show you the journey so far. If in London, pop in for a small celebration treat on us!

Only 2 weeks left to get your hands on this month’s short-run filter coffees. Tarqui Cup, a Castillo, Caturra and Colombia variety blend from the region of Tarqui in Huila, Colombia and Gitesi, a washed Bourbon of a unique lot from the Gitesi washing station in western Rwanda.

Whether you like your espresso milk drinks more on the chocolate or on the fruity side, we’ve got you covered. Go for our Opus blend for a chocolate-flavour base with honey and pecan notes or choose our Elixir blend for blueberry and strawberry flavours with hints of dark chocolate. You can’t go wrong with any of these! Try a cup in our cafe, or purchase them from our webshop.

Aren’t these coffee cherries beautiful? This image clearly shows the uncompromising commitment to quality of our partner coffee producer Lucia Ortiz from Finca Las Mercedes in El Salvador. Once coffee cherries are picked at the right state of ripeness, they are manually screened to ensure that unevenly ripe beans and “pintos” do not make the cut. Coffees from Finca Las Mercedes are set to land to our roastery mid-year, so watch this space for their release. Summer can’t come fast enough!

This week’s Throwback is to sunny Finca Santa Rosa in El Salvador, where the warm weather slowly dried the coffee you’ll be enjoying in a couple of months. Just like last year, we’ll be having the same coffee washed, honey and naturally processed to explore its potential through different angles.

The second release of our short run filter series is Tarqui Cup, from the region of Tarqui in Huila, Colombia. This coffee is the blend of outstanding coffees that participated in the annual micro lot competition in the region. Made up of Castillo, Caturra and Colombia varieties, this fully washed association coffee represents the exhaustive effort in quality of the best growers in the area. With cherry, nectarine, and passionfruit flavour notes, Tarqui Cup just shows why this coffee was competition worthy. Now available in our webshop and cafe.

The first release of this month’s short run filter series is Gitesi, a washed Bourbon of a unique lot from the renowned Gitesi washing station in western Rwanda. Owned and run by a father and son team, Alexis and Aime Gahizi, they have earned a reputation for their forward-thinking quality approach. Incentives given to farmers that increase quality by following better growing and processing protocols ensures Gitesi’s relationship with local farmers that supply nothing but superb tasting coffees. Visit our cafe or webshop to taste its plum, lemon, and chocolate flavour notes.

If you’re always outdoors, there is no excuse to brew a good cup of coffee every single time. Visit our webshop and build a small and portable brewing kit with an Aeropress, a digital mini scale and an ecoffee bamboo cup. Great coffee for the great outdoors sorted!

Not a month has gone by from our last origin trip and we just want to go back. How not to miss this stunning view of the Volcan de Fuego seen from Finca San Sebastian in Guatemala? Coffees from this farm will be landing mid-year to our roastery so keep an eye open for updates!

We’re down to the last bags of Peru’s El Diamante, one of our short run filter coffees for this month. Peruvian coffee has been getting a lot of praise and rightfully so. Give this coffee a try and find out why.

Heavy roasting day ahead? Not a problem when you’ve got a Probat G30 fired up and running. We’ll be sharing the saga of how we got this roaster in an upcoming A-Z of coffee article - it was quite the adventure and experience! In the meantime, off we go...

User

Last call to get a bag of this month’s short run coffees. Pictured above, a fully washed Hybrid De Timor and Typica blend from Duhoho, a village in the south-west of East Timor. It’s rarely common to find a coffee with gooseberry, mango and cola flavours so this is your chance!

User

The best coffee in London hands down! Try the opus :-)

User

Really great coffee. First discovered Alchemy at my local cafe and have since been to their flagship cafe near Blackfriars station. Their Baristas are on point, perfect flat whites and awesome filter coffee. Its quite a suits/business area of town, so if you avoid the rush periods of the day you'll probably find it easier to chat about their awesome selection of coffee beans from Central/South America and Africa.

User

OK, I may be biased .... but come check out Alchemy at 8 Ludgate Broadway (corner Carter Lane), just down from St Paul's. Joe and my first cafe, recently visited by Wall Street Journal who filmed them doing some coffee siphoning!

User

I love this shop. I'm a barista from the states, and the guy behind the counter was willing to talk shop with me for a good 20 minutes (including a crash course on cold brew, which I'm excited to test now that I'm back home), and sent me off with a complimentary cold-brew to go. The espresso was solid, it didn't have that bitter aftertaste that you often run into (meaning they've taken a lot of care to make sure their shots are well-pulled). If I ever make it back to London, I'll definitely be stopping here again.

User

Great music playing to enjoy a good coffee in a relaxed atmosphere; forgot I was in centre of London.

User

Excellent quality, delicious taste. Have been able to sample your coffee several times via trade stands at IT exhibitions I've attended. Also kudos to the companies who choose your coffee and hire skilled baristas to make and serve it properly.

User

Amazing delicious coffee. I really would like to make regular orders and the convienience of not having to travel to shops that stock it.. £3.50 postage per order at the moment is stopping me! Would be great if you could start a pay per bag subscription!
