When you can't refrain from putting pink powder into the model's hair! I loved keeping the face completely natural so that I could concentrate on the eyes (for a close up swipe right) to create art is to question people's opinions about what they see.... some people love it, others don't and some simply think 'why?' π I just say 'because' because I can, because it came to me in the moment, to express myself, sometimes I just follow my hands. Those three dots of black under ...the eyebrow? I splodged mascara there and I LOVE the pink powder in the hair (did I say that already!) We laughed until we cried (I have footage!) I had a broken arm which was in a cast following a bicycle accident (two breaks in the wrist and one at the elbow) so although I could do makeup I definitely couldn't do hair! Step forward the amazing talents of @stacie_smith_hair_and_makeup who not only styled all the hair for this shoot with three models but also provided the fruit, flowers and metallic body paint (such a star) π It always makes me laugh when I think about the fun we had on this shoot! Rates; These are mine. Are they negotiable? (Yes) Sometime I get paid a lot less, other times I get paid more π So, where do we stand on deciding what our rates are?
... I have attached a guideline from BECTU. Please note, these have not been updated since 2012 and 2015 - I'm not quite sure why as the cost of living has definitely gone up in the last five years! This guideline should be there for every member of the team to see so that you all know that you are getting a makeup artist for the right price / charging the right price. Obviously what you choose to charge is your decision be it higher or lower than the recommended rates.
That post above me? The one that offers makeup for Β£25 with a photo of beautiful makeup? That makeup artist makes everyone else think I am too expensive. I found out last week that I am definitely not charging enough. My rates are above. Some people with less experience charge more, some people charge less. Should I put my prices up? Probably! But I won't for now. I know people whose rates are almost double than mine and they are fully working makeup artists. Does this make them better than me? I'd probably say they are better at business than me! π I charge what I feel comfortable charging. By that, I mean 1. A fair price for you and for me. 2. A price that covers my products, time, admin, full day away from the business, sick pay, holiday pay, maternity leave, training, updating my skills, car, insurance, hygiene attention, the fact I don't have a secure daily income and more 3. All professionals have a duty to themselves and each other to keep the industry rates up, resulting in us all getting paid the "going rate"
Most of the time my 'going rate' is what people are willing to pay! π I love being a makeup artist and one of the hardest things I do is charge for having such a great day. BUT I do have bills to pay, mouths to feed, people relying on me so as much as I would love to work for a pittance, I live in a world where a pittance just won't suffice. @ Never Never Land

After working as a full time makeup artist for two and a half years, at 19 I decided to travel but in true Amy style, instead of saving up and backpacking I decided to get paid to travel so I became a holiday rep. I was placed on a small Greek island called Cephalonia. I fell in love and made my home (I lasted all of 3 months as a holiday rep so started up my own business out there instead) A year later my Mum decided to enroll me on a hair and makeup course (possibly the o...nly way to get me home π) So, back to England I flew and completed a four month intensive course in hair and makeup. As soon as the course was over I booked my flight ticket back to Cephalonia and my love. Before leaving England I discovered that they were filming Captain Corelli's Mandolin out there and did a bit of research to find out who the makeup designer was. I got lucky! I phoned and she was stuck in traffic on the M25. She was happy to talk to me! π I said I was a makeup artist living in Cephalonia and could I come and work on the film... she told me to go and see her once I was out there π I caught the bus to Samos and introduced myself. I worked on the film set helping to get the extras ready for all the crowd scenes. It was a beautiful film to work on. I must admit. I wasn't a big Nicholas Cage fan before this film but he totally changed my mind. He sat with the crew most of the time, conversing and having fun. In the evenings he would come out to the bars with us. I'm definitely a fan now! π We never really saw Penelope Cruz. She stayed in her trailer whenever she wasn't filming (rumours of Tom Cruise visiting her were rife at that point) I did return to England eventually and a few months later my love came and joined me over here. This shoot was done in December 2017 and unfortunately we still haven't managed to edit the final photos yet π This is due to our inspiration being so epic (think majestic, fantasy) that we just haven't had the time to put in post production to really bring the images to life. I'm sure we all have different ideas for the final images, mine include making the images look like they could have been computer generated and I also want to produce a painting on canvas that I can ge...t the final image printed on to. We also have to use a few images to complete just one! All of which takes time. How beautiful and happy - Friday's bride Lois who got married at Southover Grange in Lewes β€ I haven't taken on many weddings this year dues to concentrating all my focus on @sussex_makeup_academy so having three weddings in three days plus a surprise presenting job with channel five has reminded me how life used to be. As much as I have enjoyed these last 'full on' three days, my body clock has gone out of sync as has my diet! It's all gone to pot actually! Can't believe this shoot was four years ago! I was one of the makeup artists on a huge group shoot organised for networking, getting creative and working with new people. And SO many people attended that day! We had a back to back rota with timings planned out. I met so many people that day, have worked with quite a few since and am certainly still in touch with a lot of people. So, yesterday was a typical last minute type of job I get from time to time. I had a wedding in the morning and once I finished I received a phone call from @c5news They are filming a live special and am I free to do the presenter's hair and makeup? I replied that I didn't have a car to get there. Next thing I know, I have a cab knocking on my door so I swiftly abandon my boys and off I go. ... It was lovely to meet fellow hair and smell artist @blushbeautyandhair Penny was absolutely lovely. As usual, we was there for 3 and didn't start til 6pm. I was there to do Presenter Sian Williams hair and makeup whilst Penny worked on Claire Nadir We was then on set from 8pm and throughout the live from 9-10pm keeping an eye on Sian's hair and makeup and dashing in from time to time! I finally arrived home at 11pm and now I'm getting ready for today's wedding! Phew π

Close up of the stunning makeup I created on @goldchocolates The brief was natural glowing skin with makeup to compliment and shine! I applied a moisturiser to Alex's skin before using cream foundation from @bobbibrownuk I concealed using dermacolor from @kryolanuk and also the dermacolor setting powder in P1 (white) I filled the eyebrows in using an auburn eyeshadow from @kryolanuk before working on the eyes. I started off with a brush of orange all over the eyelid before... applying a rust Brown to the outer corners. About yesterday.... I was invited to attend this wonderful photoshoot arranged by model @shannonpagee_ to create makeup on three of the models. These are photos of "My Glyndebourne"! I grew up running around the grounds of glyndebourne and watching Opera's there as both my mum and dad worked in the costume department. Aged 16 I did my work experience in both the wig and makeup departments and more recently, I worked in the wig department for four years (I left at the end of 2016 to concentrate on @sussex_makeup_academy) It's a strange job I had there - I worked in a department called 'running wigs' and I was a memb...er of the "show staff" this means I worked on allocated shows putting wigs on or creating hairstyles for either the male or female chorus, the children, actors or dancers. I met so any lovely people whilst working at @glyndebourne and it was lots of fun because of the people I worked with. Working show staff means you turn up, do your job and go home. It also means working 3:30pm - 11pm so most of the time I worked during the day first and my days ended up being extra long. I missed a lot of evenings and weekends with my kids and I was ill every season due to my other work not stopping! Am I glad I left? Yes, because it was for the right reasons. Do I miss it? Yes, I miss the people, the laughs, the art, the parties, the hysteria and working in theatre Would I go back? No (or only to say hello to everyone rather than to work again) the thing about theatre is that you work for the love of Theatre. Truth be told, it didn't really fit in with my lifestyle, and it's not really paid that great... I could be working less, more sociable hours for a lot more money! Yesterday was spent creating the hair and makeup for @aliciadrummond0404 who was creating 10-15 minute videos on Teen Talks Tips Alicia is a lovely woman and her wonderful children provided us with lunch. It was such a great day and for me, it was the best job as my own boys are 14 and 12 so this was entirely relevant, I'd be lying if I didn't say I hadn't jotted down a few notes! It was great to meet Jack and Jacob who did the filming and I'm sad that I can't yet tag them ...anywhere (sort it out guys!) THANK YOU for everything you did for me on the morning of my wedding! Not only did you make me feel amazing, but I felt calm and relaxed, the whole time. I enjoyed our giggles too! You also kept other people, who were slightly stressy/excited at bay (my mother, especially - thank you for that!), so I could just relax and enjoy the preparation. I'm pretty sure that without you keeping track of time, taking control and getting me into my dress when you did, I would have been late!!!! I really can't thank you enough. You were the biggest help to me on my big day and I definitely couldn't have asked for anything more from you. You are bloody awesome! I'd recommend you in a heartbeat.
Me and my 11 year old daughter had a lovely time doing a plaiting workshop with Amy last year. It was such a lovely thing for us to do together, and Amy taught us both such a lot, highly recommended!
