About Architecture and the Built Environment at Westminster:

Westminster has one of the country’s leading and largest centres for teaching and research in Architecture and the Built Environment. With more than 2, 000 students, we are one of the largest providers of built environment education in the UK, and one of the few to bring together all the disciplines that inform the design and development of our cities providing the opportunity for working across normal professional boundaries.

From architecture to transport, construction to tourism, property to urban design, housing to planning – our subjects are all central to discussions about urban futures. Our courses range from foundation level, providing access to university degrees, right through to an ever-expanding cohort of PhD students.

We use our central London location to great effect. We have strong connections to all our professional bodies, and engage leading practitioners in the delivery of our courses. We have developed strong links with professions and future employers, leading to excellent employment prospects for our students. At postgraduate level we have a range of specialist courses that also build on our professional connections, and have a very high reputation in the external world. We are a core part of the University’s connection as a UN Habitat Partner University, reflecting the international scope of our activity.

Our research quality was recognised in the last Research Assessment Exercise, in which 20 per cent of the research in Architecture and the Built Environment was judged as ‘world-leading’, and 90 per cent as ‘international’. A range of high-level consultancy activities complements this research, and brings our knowledge directly to bear in the outside world.

Overall, we have the ambition, through our teaching, research, consultancy and outreach activities, to make a major contribution to the debate around the future of our cities.

The ‘Here East’ project, designed by the architectural practice Hawkins\Brown and led by Architecture alumna Nicola Rutt, has won the AJ100 Building of the Year award.
The sought-after annual award, delivered by the Architects Journal, is given in recognition of the finest building completed by an AJ100-listed practice in the last 12 months.
The judging panel included renowned figures in Architecture firms, editors, critics and academics, including Professor Katharine Heron, ...Professor of Architecture at the University of Westminster.
The ‘Here East’ project also recently won the British Council for Offices' (BCO) London Refurbished/Recycled Workplace Award in May 2018. The BCO judges described it as a ‘non-traditional starting point and a model for future projects’. They also highlighted the importance of a space that combines business, education and research.

Nineteen students from the combined MSc Real Estate Development, MSc Property Finance and MSc Facilities and Property Management courses at Westminster University recently completed a field trip to Hong Kong (21-29 April 2018). The study visit was organised by Dr Gheorghe Multescu (Senior Lecturer in Property) and Jane Wright (Head of Department of Property and Construction) with funding from the Quintin Hogg Trust.
The visit enabled students to compare Hong Kong and London... core property market features. Participants took part in visits and presentations by top Hong Kong Property development and investment consultancies including Savills, FTI Consulting, Jones Land LaSalle (JLL) and Swire Properties. Architects from leading Hong Kong practices (Aedas, Lead 8 and Studio QUAD) talked to the students about their major projects in Hong Kong and mainland China (e.g. West Kowloon railway station). In addition, local tours of some of the top residential and commercial landmarks gave the students a real insight into Hong Kong’s vibrant property markets. These included visits to the Gold Coast (largest residential development in Hong Kong by Sino Group), Swire’s Taikoo One place, Emperor Group’s headquarters and a double-decker (Ding-Ding) tram tour of the Hong Kong Island retail market led by K K Wong (retail consultant).
The experience was enhanced by the opportunity to meet and talk with Westminster University Alumni who are currently running top managerial roles in Hong Kong, including David Buffonge (Lead 8), Mike Allen (FTI Consulting) and Wai Tang (Studio QUAD).

Congratulations to Designing Cities student Elina Mieme, who has been awarded an RTPI Grant as part of its undergraduate bursary programme.
Eline submitted a video on the topic of urban health and wellbeing, one of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals which was selected for this year’s competition. In her video, Elina explained how she would like to see the planning profession address this goal in the future.
Giulio Verdini, Course Leader of the Designing Citi...es BA Honours course, said about this success: “This is fantastic news for Designing Cities. After only two years since the course started, one of our best students has just received a competitive grant from RTPI.

This studio-as-book is not predicated on a fixed research agenda identified with a design studio’s performative practice or a theory of architecture.
MArch 2 Studio DS11 (UoW) has rather been conceived as a self-critical framework, so this book presents the work of the studio from a critical perspective towards ‘design research’.
At its core is the development of a series of urban projects over a nine-year period. The emphasis is focused on the ‘after-life’ of the ‘design s...tudio’, a subject explored by ex-students’ reflections on the relationship between a studio-based education and their subsequent experience.
Resisting the view of architectural design produced as a model practice, it is the longer-term effect of a studio education and its embodied research that informs this book.
