On 19th and 20th February 2018, we held a conservation crowdsourcing event in the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Strathclyde. Our aim, over the two days, was to rehouse the Patrick Geddes papers, one of our most important archive collections, in acid-free folders and boxes.

Due to our Conservation Crowdsourcing event the Archives and Special Collections reading room will be closed to all readers on Monday 19th February and Tuesday 20th February.

Can you imagine going to lectures wearing a suit jacket and tie? Up until the 1960s, students did exactly that. The dress code was more formal than today, with an expectation that everyone would be smartly turned out at all times. Many students also owned, or aspired to own, the official blazer, tie, scarf or lapel badge associated with their particular college or university. These featured the institutional crest and colours and were specially manufactured by local outfitters. Wearing such garments gave students pride in their appearance and their academic achievements, as well as a sense of community and loyalty to their respective institution. Their distinctive clothing also made them instantly recognisable on the streets of Glasgow.
