"Vatikiotis offers a lucid portrait of this fascinating region by bringing together a student’s sense of wonder and curiosity, a journalist’s scepticism and diligence in making sense of the reality, and a peacemaker’s compassion for the vulnerable." - Michael Vatikiotis in the words of writer and policy adviser Salil Tripathi. Michael Vatikiotis and Lionel Shriver in Conversation.
Tickets: https://bit.ly/2s1gig4
Dramatic diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula and China’s bold thrust onto the global stage highlight Asia’s elevated importance in the world. Once remote, events in Asia are increasingly impacting on the West – whether it’s the plight of Rohingya refugees or China’s ambition to gird the world with a belt of trade.
... Two sharp-witted writers with feet firmly planted on either side of the world will discuss these and other trends in leadership, politics, and society in Asia.
Michael Vatikiotis, a journalist turned private diplomat, is the author of Blood and Silk: Power and Conflict in Modern Southeast Asia. Vatikiotis paints a bleak picture of enduring violent conflict and the advance of authoritarianism that riffs off Trump’s Fake News and the disdain for once hallowed values of human rights. Lionel Shriver is an award-winning novelist, self-confessed news-junkie and a journalist who often comments on cultural trends. Michael has asked Lionel to engage in a conversation about events in Asia set against a world no longer so clearly governed by predictable norms or rules.
This event will include an audience Q&A and a book signing by Michael Vatikiotis. Cash bar open from 18:15 until 18:45, and again following the discussion until 21:00.

I very much enjoyed the outstanding concert of music for string quartet with music composed by a diverse range of living composers from Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Shostakovich, Farokhzad Layegh and Loris Tjeknavorian. Most exciting was the London premiere of Four Haikus for string quartet by young composer Edward Kempton - which beautifully captured the atmosphere and meaning of haikus read before each movement by Mark Stephenson, who also organised the concert and narrated program and performer information during the course of the evenings music. Very exciting was the added bonus of two marvellous improvising musicians, Adib Rostami playing tombak and kamancheh and Mehdi Rostami on setar. Especially beautiful and moving was the Kurdish Lullaby. This musical evening was to commemorate the international Day of Nowruz and was certainly a very special evening of wonderful sounds and beauty. Andrew Toovey

I have shot two weddings at Asia House and it is a beautiful wedding venue in central London. Highly recommended!

User

Friendly reception, clean and tidy, lecturers or seminars takes place in a beautiful building, with congenial rooms. The hosts always presents the introduction very clearly. And the choice of events are invariably interesting.

User

Beautiful place. Food was excellent. Ideal place near to the centre of London

My purpose in Abstract art, aside from the healing nature of this art medium, which has been, and currently is, the purpose of many artists throughout the history, is a breach to an even deeper level and more inward journey in life, a brief illustration of meaning of personalities and events, with the aim to force the audience to feel the flow of life instead of a simple visual and superficial glance, so that the life’s experience and outlook can be impacted and be changed; a change towards more positive events in life in harmony with the natural laws.
