About Bankside Gallery

Bankside Gallery is on the south bank of the River Thames near Tate Modern, and is the Gallery of two historic art Societies: the Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

Bankside Gallery Description

Where we are:

Its pretty difficult to find us at the moment with the building works at Blackfriars and at the Tate, but we’re still here and open seven days a week.

Our entrance faces the Thames, so if you are coming along the Thames footpath diversion from the west, look out for the Bankside signs on Hopton Street and go through the archway. Turn right and you’ll spot the entrance. From the east head past Tate Modern and we’re down the steps on the left.

For artists or buyers collecting works from the Gallery, limited parking is available in Hopton Street for loading and unloading only.

Our societies:

The Royal Watercolour Society represents the finest watercolour painting in Britain; it is the oldest watercolour society in the world, established in 1804, and is second only to the Royal Academy of Art in importance as an art society.

The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) was founded as the Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1880, in order to counter the Royal Academy’s then refusal to recognise printmaking as a creative, rather than reproductive, art.

The Society has had many distinguished Members such as Walter Sickert, August Rodin, Dame Laura Knight, Graham Sutherland and Michael Rothenstein.

Mary Newcomb was an acute observer of her surroundings, reproducing her copious sketches alongside more finished paintings and short diary extracts to draw out the many themes which preoccupied her throughout her career as an artist.
Join us for an evening of conversation between Newcomb's Daughter and Grandson to discuss the themes in their new book: http://bit.ly/NewcombTalk

Off the Wall is all about making art affordable, original and above all accessible and that's why every artwork purchased from this exhibition is available to take home straight away. Sometimes the artworks seem to have a life of their own...

Take a break from your screen to glance at the intricate and inspiring artwork displayed near your desk. A distraction from your work can sometimes be welcome and according to The Guardian, art in a work environment can boost productivity, lower stress and increase wellbeing.

Bankside Gallery is the home of the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and all artists elected to those societies are given honorifics to use after their name. Find out the story behind the 'RE' honorific here: http://bit.ly/WhatDoesREMeanAnyway

I was intrigued to discover that the more I wondered around Bankside Gallery, the more I loved abstract painting. I suppose that within my career we too work with bold colours, shapes and textures, which is what immediately drew me to the painting. - Shaun from The Table Café visited #OffTheWall and chose this Patricia Cain work as his favourite. - View the other works in our Bankside Business Choice here: http://bit.ly/BanksideBusinessChoice
