Batty Langley'S

About Batty Langley'S

Amongst the bustling, cobbled streets of Spitalfields, we have opened our latest Traditional Boutique Townhouse Batty Langley’s

Batty Langley'S Description

Batty Langley's is ideally placed as the gateway to this corner of Old London. In among the cobbled streets and Georgian buildings that surround the hotel are some of the capital's coolest pubs, bars, shops, restaurants and street markets.

The hotel itself looks and feels just like a rather grand, 300-year-old town house, complete with richly furnished drawing room, library, parlour and courtyard garden. Our 29 characterful bedrooms are all furnished with genuine antiques and named after real people who lived in the area (we don't believe in numbering our guests). Our bathrooms all have period fittings, refurbished, of course, to modern standards of efficiency.

Our staff, famously helpful and efficient, too, all work here because they love the place. Yet, behind all the charm, our networking and communications facilities are thoroughly up to date.

We shouldn't have favourites, but the bathroom in our Kitty Fisher suite is hard to beat. A bath that you can swim in and a shower so enjoyable it's almost impossible to get out.

This room at Batty Langley's is named after Sarah Marchant, the grand-daughter of Nicholas Marchant, a Huguenot emigree from Normandy. Sarah was born in London in 1765. Her family, by then comfortably established in the textile trade, were deeply shocked when, at the age of 21, she secretly married Martin Hurlin, an illiterate journeyman weaver. She was six months pregnant at the time, and her first-born, a daughter also named Sarah, was followed by nine other children, all... but one of whom survived to adulthood.

Batty Langley was father to 14 children, 4 by his first wife Anne who died in 1726, and 10 by second wife Catherine. We know that 5 of his sons were named Batty, Hiram, Euclid, Vitruvius and Archimedes. We would love to know what the other children were named, can anyone help?

A small corner of just one of our rooms. I wonder, if we were to ask you to guess how many books we had at Batty Langley's, would anyone even get close? #worldbookday #battylangleys #eastlondon #secretlondon

Jack Sheppard (4 March 1702 – 16 November 1724). His first recorded crime was of two silver spoons, taken when he was just a child. By the age of 22 he had not only helped Elizabeth Lyons, a convicted prostitute, escape from prison, but escaped himself after being convicted of pick-pocketing in Leicester Square. After being sent to Newgate Prison for burglary with his accomplice Blueskin Blake, he was sentenced to death. Sheppard escaped yet again, though was arrested soon ...after for highway robbery and was committed to a strongroom at Newgate, nicknamed The Castle. There he was handcuffed, manacled and chained to staples in the floor, but managed to unlock the handcuffs with a rusty nail and to remove the chains. He then broke through six barred doors into the house next door before creeping down to the street, still wearing leg irons. Having been captured for the last time, he was loaded with 300 pounds of lead weights and placed under constant observation before being taken to Tyburn, where he was hanged in front of an admiring crowd on 16th November, 1724.

"A beatnik boutique hotel that refuses to wither away with the past nor conform to the ever changing tide of the future. Batty’s beats to its own drum".

Alongside horse manure and vinegar, the main ingredient in skin-whitening creams and powders was lead. Daubed liberally on the face and neck, like a mime artist’s grease paint, these applications were then highlighted with colouring to imitate veins and moles, or ‘beauty spots’ as they were called. As for lips and cheeks, they were tinted with a further coating of lead, this time coloured with carmine, a bright red pigment obtained from aluminium salts of carminic acid, often mixed with even more toxic mercury. Luckily the @renskincare products we provide for our guests are much kinder #georgianhistory

A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN. Part 1; Ann Flynn
We don’t number our rooms, we name them after real people with connections to the building or the area. This is the first of a series telling their stories:
Ann Flynn was indicted at the Old Bailey for stealing from a butcher in Whitechapel, very near our delightful Spitalfields hotel, Batty Langley’s. In his evidence the butcher claimed he had been busy with another customer when Ann, seizing the opportunity, had helped herself to a sh...oulder of mutton and fled the shop. At her subsequent hearing she confessed to the crime whilst telling a tale of woe that moved the jury to tears.
“Gentlemen,” said the judge, Sir William Parsons, “I understand you.” He then sentenced her to be fined one shilling and released at once, whereupon the jury contributed the required sum with smiles all round.
Shedding a little tear or two ourselves, we’ve named one of the rooms at Batty Langley’s after her. Poor Ann deserves her moment of fame.

Wow! What a beautiful hotel! I booked a two night stay as a birthday treat for my wife and we were very kindly upgraded to a suite upon arrival. The Obadiah Shuttleworth room is beautiful - lovely decor and very characterful with a comfortable bed. The bathroom is also very nicely decorated with a quirky ‘throne’ for a toilet. This is the only thing that I would pick up as less than perfect and that is only because it’s probably best suited to 18th century physiques! I’m not that large but it’s quite snug on there...

The hotel is situated very close to Liverpool Street station and round the corner from the buzzing Spitalfields Market, full of bars, restaurants, street-food pop-ups and market stalls. Despite this, the rooms are very quiet so we both slept very well.

The staff were also excellent. Attentive and professional, without being intrusive. The free cake in the Tapestry room was also appreciated! All in all, we would definitely recommend this hotel as a charming, characterful retreat; well placed in a vibrant part of town.

User

Wonderful stay at an exceptional hotel. Tucked away in bustling Spitalfields, yet when you step inside the door you enter an oasis of calm with a wonderful grown up vibe. Fabulous decor and a real sense of luxury. Can't wait to come back.

User

We stayed here for the weekend and had a fantastic time. The place was perfect but affordable luxury with charm suiting the vibrant and historical local area which is totally fascinating.

User

This is a gorgeous place to stay and the bed that you climb up onto will be the most exquisite you ever sleep in. However the sister hotel the rookery has the edge. Both hotels are beautiful and done in the exact same way as far as the decor goes (amazing) but the location of the rookery is much better / easier to get to from the tube/ better restaurants and pubs on the doorstep / and although the staff and service are simply wonderful in both hotels there is something altogether more cosy and friendly about the rookery.

User

Thank you for the most fantastic stay at the weekend. Thoroughly impressed with your welcome, decor, customer service and location. My only disappointment was forgetting to check the make of the best mattress in the world! Can not wait to book with you again!

User

Thank you for a fantastic stay. We will definitely be back. Great hotel, staff were welcoming and friendly. Couldn't rate it enough

User

Such a wonderful boutique hotel. I would thoroughly recommend staying here, it's very quirky and full of character. Very attentive staff and a very trendy area to walk round.

User

Oh my its stunning like walking bk in time beautiful place didnt want to leave..the hotel has a peaceful charm to it as with the staff who cant be faulted. Rooms where magnificent soo peaceful cant really explain by far the best hotel ive stayed in

User

My partner booked this hotel for our engagement :) Beautiful rooms, building, and five star service!! quaint.... but so elegant, absolutely loved it!!!

User

My husband booked our stay for our first wedding anniversary and we had the best time at Batty Langleys. The staff were so polite and helpful and the room was exquisite. The bed was large and comfortable and the roll top bath was heaven. We will definitely be back!

User

Lovely hotel full of character. Friendly staff and so peaceful which isn't often the case with London hotels. Handy location for Spital Field market and very near Liverpool St station so easy to get around. Super comfy bed and fab shower.

User

Loved it! Beautiful cosy room with a large comfortable four poster bed. I also enjoyed the beautiful sitting room with the bar and courtyard garden - the sound of the fountain is so relaxing! A magical place, an oasis of tranquility and privacy in the busy city.

User

Just divine. From the service to the most comfortable bed you'll ever have slept in to the stunning bathrooms and cosy lounge areas with open fires, this is a perfect oasis of calm in the City. Loved it!!

User

Just back from a fantastic 3 night break at the hotel & it’s honestly one of the loveliest I’ve ever stayed in! Everything is immaculate, the bed & pillows were so comfortable and the staff were extremely helpful! Great location near to Liverpool Street station as well! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!

User

I’ve only just walked in the door and I am in love!!! Wow wow wow!!! What a place!!!! By far my fav hotel!

User

Great oasis of calm in central London. Would definitely go back - only thing missing was tea / coffee making facilities in room.

User

Excellent hotel in Spitalfields. I've stayed in some great hotels in different countries and this rates in my top 5. It feels grown up, with a sense of fun! Comfortable and spacious, quiet and private. We stayed in the Henry William Pickersgill room. Tasteful, classy decor with a formula which works throughout the hotel. I like the way the lift is tucked away out of sight, so it looks more like a country house than a hotel.

User

Beautiful hotel and the most comfortable bed and room. I loved the tub and shower and felt so at home. Very attentive staff as well. I wish I was staying longer!

User

After traveling all night and into the morning we needed a tranquil setting to lay our weary heads. Batty's is perfect and we were treated with a much needed tray of tea in our room when we arrived! Fantastic nights sleep to boot.
