Right now my beautiful home province is burning. It’s a epic ecological catastrophe which has no doubt been highly influenced by global warming. As well as the terrible threat to so many people and their land, another terrifying consequence of this fire is the loss of habitat for all the gorgeous diverse wildlife of British Columbia, including these 3 species of birds.
I hope it rains soon. I hope the air quality will i...mprove so people can breathe again. Thank you to all the fire fighters and volunteers working tirelessly to try to help.

Here he is, the finished grey jay or Whiskey jack!
Whiskey Jacks nickname is actually an anglicised version of it’s First Nations name “Wisakedjak” he is a benevolent figure in First Nations culture, and like the Raven is also portrayed as a trickster. I have fond memories of these little jays regularly showing up at our campfires to steal our food. Once these clever little birds associate people with food, they never forget! Done!! Finally!!! All those feathers, this one was a real challenge! I chose a raven to do as my next British Columbia bird not only because they are my favourite bird but also as they have so much symbolism and meaning to the local indigenous cultures. My favourite of these is their role in Haida mythology as the trickster. In Haida mythology he created the island of Haida Gwaii, released the sun from a tiny box, created the moon and the stars and released the first humans ...from a cockle shell. So this is a portrait of a beloved pup named Ben who passed away many years ago. As he passed years ago, my client was not able to provide a clear reference photo-(swipe to see the reference). Obviously where it is possible a nice clear reference is preferable but sometimes if a pet has passed it’s just not possible. Finally got around to finishing this little steller’s jay...and I got to use my new caran d’ache pastel pencils and I LOVE them! 💗I love stellers jay as a they remind me of being home in BC. I sort gained a love/hate relationship with the velour paper, but I love love love how rich the @unisoncolour pastels pigments are on the velour, and how soft the finish is. So! I finally got a chance to try out velour paper, this little owl is currently coming along nicely although I’m definitely finding the texture of the paper a bit more challenging. So I can finally post this portrait of my Mum’s lovely pup Finlay I made her for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately it took 2 weeks to arrive for some crazy reason! Oh well better late than never. Finlay is the sweetest and loveliest little rescue dog. His life started pretty hard, he was left out in the freezing cold weather and his paws froze. Luckily he was rescued and thanks to my very patient parents, he learned to trust and love. Now he is just the nicest dog who adores his (...my) mum 😊💗 . . .
