Bermondsey Street Bees Description

High above Bermondsey Street, with views to Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge and The Shard, a thriving apiary produces award-winning honey. The bees forage in parks, window boxes, roof terraces, railway sidings and allotments. This unusually varied diet creates a wonderfully complex honey, which varies season to season.

‪Snowberry coming into flower. But heaped on the paving stones in Tannner Street Park, after being cut by Southwark Council’s operatives, despite our pleas to allow it to come into full bloom. Why let it grow for half the year - and then cut it back as soon as it provides pollinator forage?

‪A busy Monday morning ahead, with orders going out from our Honey HQ to our chef, hotel, restaurant, barista and local business clients. Thanks to all our clients, old and new, for your support for an independent, artisan business focused on sustainable honey productio‬

‪Slightly dog-eared, eccentrically-named & definitely having seen better days, I was delighted to receive this beekeeping treasure from Jake Alice Through the Looking Glass(14 Cecil Court, London WC2N 4HE.
It’s a 1929 third edition poetically subtitled “A Manual Of Honeycraft”.
Spoiler alert: the bees survived The Great Depression (1929-1939)...‬

‪Just as each journey begins with the smallest step, every pollen load starts with the merest dusting of tiny grains. It has been calculated that, over a whole year, each honeybee colony needs to gather 50kg of pollen protein to fuel its existence!‬

‪There were 36 different pollens found in Bermondsey Street Honey by the National Honey Monitoring Scheme. That explains the complexity of flavour in our urban rooftop honey. So here’s a chance to meet some of those pollens, stored by the bees in their natural habitat of wax comb.‬

‪It’s been a tricky couple of weeks in the beekeeping world. Wet, windy weather reverses honey production, prevents mating flights and generally makes the bees grumpy. Happily, there’s hope on the horizon with warmer weather forecast to accompany the bramble and lime nectar flows.‬

‪As part of London Tech Week, we’re showcasing our Honey and Lifestyle products at “Thinking Big For Small Business” with Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter (& Square, the payments system). Great that traditional, manual labourers like us are invited to parlay with technology innovators.‬

‪Our bees are helping to bridge the gap between dereliction and regeneration, here at our apiary sites in The Royal Docks. These urban brownfield sites are rich in native, pioneer trees and shrubs, and are bursting with biodiversity.

We’re thrilled to be presenting at Honey and Co’s “Food Talks” podcast this Monday evening (3rd June).
Expect a discussion of raw, artisan honey production, sustainable urban beekeeping and a few surprising facts about honeybees’ own favourite food sources (no, not wildflowers!)

‪Yes!!!! Our specially-commissioned beeswax wraps, including the ‘must-have’ loaf wrap, are now in Borough Market’s new lifestyle store (seek it out just behind Padella).
‪This range was developed in collaboration between Bermondsey Street Bees and the Borough Market team and it was a brilliant project to work on.‬

‪Our Globe Observation Hive is not only a crowd-pleaser, but it also allows the bees to fly up to food inside the globe. This helps to educate youngsters that adult bees fly out of their hive to gather food for their babies - and that they have no intention of bothering any of us.‬

The Ting Restaurant in the Shangri-La Shard said: “We’re buzzing about our new dessert, The Honey Pot. Inspired by our neighbours at Bermondsey Street Bees, this deliciously, cool dessert is made from their honey & is also made up of lemon curd mousse, preserved lemon & honeycomb biscuit“.

‪Green is the colour of sustainablity. It is also this year’s queen marking colour - and it’s going down well with the @BermondseyBees - just listen to that buzz!!!‬

‪Here’s the tittle-tattle on some London beekeeping from The Tatler.
Looking through all the glitz and razzamatazz, the keyword here is “sustainable”.‬

‪Don’t be deceived. It takes a lot of work throughout the year to make this beekeeping lark look picture perfect.‬
