Approximately 50, 000 residents work outside Bexley, although the borough itself has some 68, 000 jobs with Belvedere the second largest manufacturing area in the capital. Unemployment is low, at almost half the London average however there are pockets of unemployment in some parts in the north of the borough.

Bexley is one of the safest boroughs in London and has seen the biggest drop in overall crime across the capital (2010 /11).

Policing in Bexley is enhanced by 21 Safer Neighbourhoods Policing Teams working in and with local communities to tackle issues that are important to residents and businesses. Bexley also has a Safer Transport Team, dedicated to policing the transport network which has made significant improvements to the safety and comfort of the travelling public.

There are more than 100 Special Constables, the majority of whom live in the borough. They give up their time to police their own community and take ownership of local problems.

A prolific burglar who targeted unoccupied homes during the day and stole valuables has been jailed.
David O'Shea, 35 (12.06.83) of Southend Crescent, Eltham SE9, was sentenced to five years and four months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to ten counts of burglary and one of attempted burglary at Woolwich Crown Court on Wednesday, 20 February.
The offences were committed between August 2018 and January 2019 in south-east London and Kent.
... In each case, O'Shea gained entry by smashing a window at the side or back of the property, and ransacked the property before stealing cash, jewellery and electrical items. A number of the victims were elderly. With the attempted burglary, O'Shea was disturbed by residents, and the elderly occupant of the property was in at the time.
The investigation was lead by South East Command Unit CID based at Lewisham.
DNA evidence linked O'Shea to each of the offences, with CCTV and witness accounts also supporting the case against him.
He was arrested on 21 January 2019, and gave a no comment interview.
Detective Constable Brad Wood of the South-East Command Unit, said: "David is a prolific burglar and serial offender with many prior convictions who indiscriminately targeted homes to steal valuables.
"He left a number of elderly, vulnerable residents feeling violated, unsafe, and not wanting to leave their homes.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of cruelty to a police dog and theft of a motor vehicle after a pursuit in Bexley.
Officers from the Met’s South East Area Basic Command Unit (BCU) were travelling on Harrow Manorway, SE2 at approximately 00:30hrs on Thursday, 7 February when a vehicle with false number plates was spotted.
The officers switched on their blue lights signalling for the vehicle to stop, but it failed to do so and made off. The officers began pursuing the veh...icle, and were joined by colleagues from the Met’s Dog Support Unit (DSU).
During the pursuit, the suspect reversed into the DSU vehicle. The stolen car became stuck on a roundabout as a result.
One officer approached the suspect’s vehicle, deploying Police Dog Alfa at the same time.
The officer attempted to open the door, but the suspect struggled to keep it closed – slamming it on PD Alfa’s head multiple times in the process.
The officer used his baton and managed to remove the suspect from the vehicle.
The 36-year-old man was subsequently detained by PD Alfa. He was arrested on suspicion of the following:
- Failing to stop for police; - Dangerous driving; - Theft of a motor vehicle; - Going equipped to commit theft; - Criminal damage to a police vehicle; - Driving whilst disqualified; - Driving without insurance; - Cruelty to an animal.
He was taken to a south east London police station where he remains in custody.
The London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended and provided medical attention to the man for an injury to his arm that he sustained when PD Alfa detained him.
PD Alfa was taken to a south east London veterinary centre for a check-up and has been kept overnight for observation.
Superintendent Emma Richards, from the Met’s Taskforce, said: “This is the second time in as many weeks we have witnessed the sheer bravery of officers working within the Met’s Taskforce and Dog Support Unit (DSU).
“This officer and canine companion stopped at nothing to apprehend this violent and reckless individual, who showed no concern for the welfare of the public, police, or police animals in his actions.
“Our officers work day and night to make the streets of London a safer place, and this is a prime example of the kind of situations they encounter, but tackle with bravery and professionalism.
“We will be supporting the officer and PD Alfa over the coming days to ensure they both make a full recovery.”
