What did you do today?
'All I did was pick up a sock and it just went'
That one action may have been the final action that finally caused your back, neck, hip, foot to 'go'. But its all the actions before that one, that really made your body give up!
... Whatever your body spends the most amount of time doing (or not doing) will mold you into what you have become.
Just think of it this way, if you spent the entire day doing squats you are going to have one hell of a booty! And most likely bloody achy legs.
Its exactly the same as if you spend most of your day slumped over a desk, or balancing a baby on one hip.
Functions governs structure, and structure governs function.

OSTEOPATHS DON'T FOCUS ON JUST YOUR SYMPTOMS. We want to know why you are in pain. Look at this picture. Common complaint may be left shoulder pain. What is causing the left shoulder pain?

Golfer's elbow? Tennis elbow? Pain on the inside or outside of your elbow on wrist activation can indicate medial or lateral epicondylitis- also known as Golfers or Tennis elbow. My patient was feeling the burn while working out, on the inside of his elbow- the forearm extensor compartment attachment point.
After realigning the rest of his body and activating the glutes (yes your sleeping ass muscles can be a cause of this!) We finished off with some dry needling and taping...! #osteopathy #bodybasicsosteopathy #treatment #elbowpain #pain #rehab #pilates #london #acupuncture #dryneedling #rocktape #fasciallines #painfree #holistic #training #injury #traininginjury

Are you using your back properly? Probably not!!
Most of us seem to have one highly developed movement... Bending forward. The ultimate slouch posture practiced hours a day by us sitting in front our computers, our phones, in a car, on the train, and on the sofa. We are professionals at the *slouch*!
... Your thoracic spine ( the bit in between your neck and lower back) is made to bend forwards, backwards, sideways and most importantly ROTATE!
Lack of movement in the thoracic spine is innocuous! Most people don't even realise how stuck they really are there. Mainly because the pain doesn't manifest in that area of your back.
You are more likely to feel it in these places: - Neck - Shoulders - Lower back
Try this sequence to improve spinal mobility- (super sped up for fast viewing, take your time while you complete!)
Cat-Cow 8-10reps Moving cat-cow 8-10 reps Lat stretch in childs pose- hold for 30seconds Thread the needle 8-10reps Side body dynamic stretch 8-10 reps Downward dog hold for 5 deep breaths Pilates Roll down 2-3 Straddle spinal rotations 6-8 reps Full squat or childs pose to finish
That is 5-10 minutes out of your busy day, giving your body some love!

The say practice makes perfect..... Well, based of this I would agree. As an osteopath I am forever promoting movement to my patients.
Good joint health= Stability+ Mobility
... My patients often ask me what I do to keep myself in full working order (and so strong while treating!) As a very right sided dominant practitioner, not working on both stability and mobility breaks me! I mix my gymming with yoga... and some treatment!
The past few months- and a very indulgent Christmas has made me lazy in my yoga practice. Lack of focus and practice has tightened me up and has made me very shaky (as you can see my slight stumbling in the video!)
But, I'm back on it again. I wanted to post this because my social media is full of the most amazing yoginis looking graceful, bendy and strong in all positions. When I speak to patients they often comment on how attending yoga classes make them feel inadequate because the person next to them is so much more accomplished than they are. There will always be someone that is a bit better practices in something than you!
The cliche saying is 'practice makes perfect', which is true, but I also say screw it! It's OK to be a beginner and start from somewhere, and it's OK to be crap at things, wobble and fall over- as long as your safe in your body and striving to maintain form!
Keep moving people! I'll be posting some simple exercises you can do at home for common problematic areas soon!

Do you carry your phone In your bra?
There is more and more research being published on the detrimental effects of radiation from mobiles.
An interesting piece regarding females under the age of 40, with no family history of breast cancer, developing tumors where their phone was frequently tucked away in their bras.
