Lawyer Jonathan Cameron and writer Martin Baker launch Boom Op Films, chaired by Nicola Horlick
Boom Op Films is launching its first slate of films through an Enterprise Investment Scheme company. Boom Op is taking a revolutionary business model to market - low-budget, high-quality movies that take advantage of the disruptive impact of modern technology to produce visually sumptuous movies distributed in ways well suited to the online age.
Boom Op is headed up by Jonathan Cameron and Martin Baker, two qualified lawyers with extensive experience in the media. Cameron, an experienced media law practitioner, produced Mohammed Ali's Greatest Fight, a Stephen Frears movie - the only UK movie officially invited to be screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Baker, after qualifying at a big City firm, left law to work in journalism, and is now a novelist, script editor and journalist. Completing the team is fund manager and film producer, Nicola Horlick, who will act as non-executive chairman.
Boom Op is looking to raise £1. 5 million, which will be invested in up to 12 film projects over three years. The new vehicle has preliminary approval from HMRC in the UK, thus allowing investors to gain tax benefits under the Enterprise Investment Scheme.
Baker said: "We are going to be a studio in microcosm. We'll do the lot - development, shooting, post-production, distribution and sales. Boom Op has identified a very exciting market niche for high-quality projects made by professional film-makers with an excellent track record. "
Cameron said: "We're in a new world. Technology means films can be made to an extremely high technical standard for a minimal capital outlay. What's especially exciting is the impact of the online world on distribution and sales - that situation is changing daily. The old models just don't work any more. We will make the new ones work for our investors. "
