💕🎯Update from Tom's mum - the power of food never ceases to amaze me!💕🎯
Tom is 7 and came to our Brainstorm Health Clinic with debilitating facial tics, poor appetite, and low energy levels, as well as high levels of anxiety. After some Functional Lab tests, we put a plan together for Tom using our unique 5 STEPS-to-Health Programme. This is his mum’s update after just 2 weeks! Things don't always happen this fast but when they do it's just the absolute best!
“Tom has been ti...c free for 2 whole weeks! the only changes we have made are taking dairy out of Tom’s diet and using the enzymes you recommended. It’s incredible really… Tom also says his head feels less hot?? I don’t know what that means but it can only be good? I can’t thank you enough Stella. He definitely seems brighter and even spent some time with his little sis yesterday, which he NEVER does :) We plan to do the rest of the plan over the next few weeks….can't wait!”
Well done mummy and the gorgeous Tom for being such a trooper and listening to his wonderful hard working mummy! x

🌟AUTISM "ACTION" MONTH - 3 STORIES - 3 FACTS🌟
💙 People with autism have much higher medical comorbidities than non-autistic peers. 💙 These medical problems are often not recognized, investigated or treated. 💙 Successfully treating comorbidities can improve quality of life immeasurably, often reducing the symptoms of autism.
... The incredible charity Thinking Autism has created a video, as part of the effort to create a long overdue understanding of the above facts

***DIRTY DOZEN LIST 2019*** 🌳KALE is surprisingly at number 3 in the Dirty Dozen list of fruits and vegetable for 2019.🌳
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization focused on human health and the environment, produces an annual list of the fruit and veg with the most pesticide residue. Number one spot is still taken by strawberries followed by Spinach at Number 2.
... It's not always possible to buy organic fruit and veg due to cost but if you eat any of the ones on the Dirty Dozen list regularly then please consider sourcing organic versions whenever possible.
DIRTY DOZEN LIST STARTING WITH THE "DIRTIEST"
1. Strawberries 2. Spinach 3. Kale 4. Nectarines 5. Apples 6. Grapes 7. Peaches 8. Cherries 9. Pears 10. Tomatoes 11. Celery 12. Potatoes
We love Riverford and Abel & Cole. Check them out for the most amazing organic quality produce. NO affiliations here!!! just massive respect for these organisations, committed to organic and sustainable farming.

🎯🌟Is your child flaring?… think histamine!!🌟🎯
It’s the time of year when kids with autism, PANS or PANDAS can have a significant increase in their symptoms including; more OCD, rage, aggression, anxiety even if they don’t have any “allergic-like” symptoms. What may be happening is a non-allergic mast cell activation in response to environmental and stress triggers, which in turn may be contributing to inflammation.
What can you do?... 🎯Remove problem foods - see article 🎯Include foods that reduce histamine levels daily such as ginger, garlic and onions, elderberries, bee pollen, and fennel leaves. 🎯Include histamine lowering supplements. Quercetin and vitamin C, as well as nettle tincture, are very easy to administer and a great first line of supplements to use. Please work with your practitioner or medical doctor when adding in new supplements.
To read more about how histamine can impact your child and what you can do to help please read our article first published in the Autism Eye in autumn 2017.

💫🌺BEST KALE CRISPS EVER!🌺💫
My daughter and I are both doing the Brainstorm Health 30-day Body Reset Diet which I often recommend to patients to get the body back on track, especially after a long winter. These yummy kale crisps have become one of our absolute favourite snacks to have. Loaded with B vitamins to support the nervous system, the addition of almond butter for the protein and coconut oil for the healthy fats really help hit the spot when you are looking for somethi...ng to tide you over before your main meal.
I know kale crisps are not a new thing and to suggest these are the best is a bold claim but this ridiculously easy recipe using only 3 ingredients can be made in less than 5 minutes and is seriously spectacular with an amazing umami type flavour that is just irresistible.
If you try nothing else this week please have a go at making these. You will be hooked!

⭐️❤️Update from Olle’s mum….Awesome team!❤️⭐️
Olle is 5 years old and has an autism diagnosis. He came to our clinic last month with digestive issues, including persistent stomach pains which had been investigated by the GI specialist without resolution. Olle was already following a gluten and casein free diet when he came to see us.
This is mum’s feedback after just 5 days of starting the Functional Medicine based Health Plan designed for Olle.
... “We saw changes in our son after 5 days of the diet!! He now sleeps all through the night without coming up and the stomach aches are very rare! Also, his abdomen is not as distended as before! He seems happier!”
We can’t wait to see how much more we can achieve with Olle. Well done champ! x

⭐️🍥5 MINUTE DAIRY AND SUGAR-FREE FUDGE🍥⭐️ I love simple, quick and delicious recipes. This is a fab recipe by the talented Hemsley sisters and it's an absolute gem. It requires no cooking and takes moments to assemble. The hardest part is waiting 30 minutes for the fudge to firm up in the fridge!

🍏🥗UPDATE FROM SAMI'S MUM!🍏🥥 Sami is 2 years old and has an autism diagnosis. Mum came to see me a couple of months ago. It was clear from the initial assessment that Sami might have sensitivity to phenolic foods. This is mum’s feedback after a few weeks on a low phenol diet
“Just wanted to share some good news so far about Sami, it’s only been two weeks since we saw Stella but Sami no longer has red cheeks, cracked bleeding lips and the eczema on his body has gone, his itchin...ess has subsided by more then 75%. I adopted the low phenol diet straight away and looking into the Feingold Diet has been eye opening I can’t believe I missed that diet amongst my research....I havnt started the supplements just yet and I’ve seen so much improvement. I look forward to seeing how much more great progress he makes!”

⭐️EMPOWER YOURSELF & CHANGE THE OUTCOME⭐️
I received a call from a mother with a 2.5-year-old son who wanted our help. Her son suffers from extreme digestive issues. She explained that she had been referred to a Gastroenterologist by her GP and that during her appointment, the consultant paid close to attention to what the mother was saying, explaining the horrendous digestive issues this child had been experiencing for a number of months. She then mentioned to the consultant... that her son was being assessed for autism. The consultant stopped writing notes as soon as the mum said this, and asked why the mum had not mentioned the potential autism diagnosis at the start of the consultation. The child was discharged with no further investigation. The consultant explained that his gut symptoms were because of autism and there was nothing more to do.
My brain cannot compute this response but unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. It is totally and utterly unacceptable for this situation to exist.
Next time a medical professional dismisses the significant impact of gut health in symptoms of autism, please show them this 2019 peer-reviewed study published in Translation Psychiatry. This is a systematic review which means that hundreds of research papers were scrupulously vetted and only those with enough quality were included in the main study. In this case, 17 peer-reviewed papers were taken into account.
***What did this study find?***
“significant alterations of gut microbiota in ASD patients compared with healthy controls, strengthen the evidence that dysbiosis of gut microbiota may correlate with behavioural abnormality in ASD patients”
We work extensively with children with an autism diagnosis and have formulated a unique 5-step functional medicine based approach to restoring gut health and establishing healthy gut/brain connection.
