Braintree Rugby Club are deeply saddened to inform our membership that club stalwart Simon Fookes passed away on the morning of Wednesday 12th June with his family beside him. As most of you know, Simon was suffering from a brain tumour which had become inoperable. An astounding amount of almost £40,000 was raised through friends, family, club members and even strangers in order for him to have immunotherapy in Germany. Sadly Simon passed away within weeks of his second se...ssion of treatment. Simon was deeply respected by everyone who knew him, and much loved at the rugby club. He was always one of the first to put his hand up when anything needed doing and first on site for Guy Fawkes preparation or in fact any other event where his expertise and calm thinking was needed. Through his business, The Amazing Tent Company, he supported the club by providing Saddlespan tents for the huge Field of Dreams fund raisers in 2011 and 2012, and every Summer for the Braintree 7s Beer Cider and Music Festival. On the rugby side, as well as playing for Braintree for many years, he also coached what is now our Under 14s age group, for whom his son Jake plays, until his illness took the upper hand. Simons funeral will take place at St. Mary’s Church, Bocking at 2.15pm on Friday 12th July, followed by a wake in celebration of his life at Braintree Rugby Club. Family flowers only please, and as the family were so overwhelmed by the generous support given towards his immunotherapy treatment in Germany, there will be no official charity collection. However, if people wish to make some form of donation, the family are happy for this to be to a charity of your own choice. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kate, Jake, Jess, his mother, brothers, family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all of us – a true gentleman.
