Stayed on business in the Premier which included the meal deal in the Royal Forest. Tuesday night was a really busy theme night and busy always means popular so to me- good quality.

I left eating till around 7:30 and the restaurant was already squared away, tables etc cleaned and ready for new diners.

Had a great meal albeit, being from Somerset it would be nice for cider to be on the deal menu.

But food was great and well cooked. Breakfast this morning was great and the staff friendly and helpful right thru my stay.

Thanks to all!!

Went to Royal forest today for an early dinner ended up waiting just over an hour for the food to come out then noticed a table who ordered at least 30 mins after us get their food literally just after us (same food). The waitress apologised for the wait but an hour was excessive that being said the food was lovely and hot on arrival.

We had a pre-holiday family meal in the evening. Food was really nice. Everything we ordered was available. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. Couldn’t fault it at all. It was a fantastic way to begin our holiday. Well done everyone. Keep up the good work 😀

Food was nice but no atmosphere and staff didn't apear very friendly.

Visited this Sunday 8th July for lunch with family (9 of us) food was o.k. but need new cleaners as pub was very dirty. Chairs full of crumbs and floor needed a good hoover, still 21 confetti on floor from previous nights meal. Did not feel clean at all.

User

Not the most competent serving. But food was okay at the end.

It's grand inside and staff are pleasant. It's set in such a stunning location so someone should have the sense to powerhose the outside tables, which are positively filthy. No excuse for that in this day and age.

Food was nice and enjoyed the evening. Would have like staff to be there to explained how to order food. It was our first visit. But at least we didn’t feel rush.

Xmas Day meal yesterday for 7 of us. Food choices booked in advance. Main course was lovely, but long wait for starters and desserts. Sauce for prawn cocktail was watery and tasteless. Grand daughter had ordered cheesecake when we made the booking but her dessert was forgotten. On asking, we were told it had all gone. Service was poor at times.

Was ok... table number missing, so when we went to order the bar person got a bit rude saying she couldn't put through an order if she hadn't got a table number. Not my fault the number was missing. Couldn't order the starter.. 2 for 2.50 as it was a bank holiday...what difference does that make? We weren't told this when we were given the menu's. Chips overdone, the chips on the next table were totally different colour to ours. Only 1 drinks machine and that was at the other end of the restaurant. Why not in the middle with the coffee machine? Needed better lighting where we were seated.. very dark.

Waited 40 mins for food. Mine and my sisters meal didn't come as specified on the menu. They didn't have any drinks on draft as they had ran out of gas. I also noticed they kept their bottled real ale in the fridge which is not the way it's meant to be stored. Only 3 members of staff on the till and none of them were particularly quick waited 20 minute's in the cue just to order pudding. All in all not the best experience.

We were told where a our table was . We sat for about ten minutes waiting for a waitress to come and take our drinks order. I went and found a waitress who informed me we had to go to the bar to purchase food and drinks , not a problem but would have been nice to be told on arrival . We were a large group and food came out all together which was good , stat from two of our party who had ordered starters which came out with their mains !!!. Food was mediocre and bland . Ok for the price .

Visited for lunch Monday 2nd October. Long queue to order food, bar understaffed. Table sticky, clearly hadn’t been wiped down. Food (a pasta dish and a burger) were totally inedible. Pasta looked like it had been made the week before and been left until someone ordered it. Chips were cold and dry, burger was ok. Also returned two pints of Doom Bar as they were cloudy and tasted like vinegar! Asked for and was given a full refund with no argument. Such a shame as this is a beautiful building in a fantastic location. Will not be returning.

I've been coming to the Royal Forest for years. Not very often, but I've seen it get worse with every visit.

The place was very busy today. Not surprising as the weather forecast was good, which means many folk were out for a pleasant day in Epping Forest. The Royal Forest was not geared up for this. The queues were horrendous and the staff looked stressed and rushed off their feet.

We couldn't go elsewhere as we were hiking and my husband hurt his back and needed to rest and take some painkillers, otherwise we'd have walked out.

The food, when it eventually arrived was awful. We had the vegan burgers, which must have been kept warm for hours as they were totally dried out. Part of the order didn't arrive and I had to find someone to sort this out.

When I went to get cutlery, they had run out of knives. The only sauces on offer were ketchup, mustard and salad creme. (All in little sachets)

We ate the food because we were really hungry and would have eaten a pile of dry bread at that point.

The beer was also not up to scratch. We had Doombar, which we have had in many different pubs before. It was not well kept here.

There were many tables left uncleared for the whole time we were in there.

The toilets were not very clean and had run out of paper too.

I went here yesterday for dinner. After 10 minutes standing around, we were shown to a table and told to go to the bar when we were ready to order. The chairs were all grotty, everything looked grotty and dirty. After ordering, it took what seemed an eternity to get our food and it definitely wasn't worth the wait!

I had the smothered chicken and the other half had the mixed grill upgraded for more gammon and chicken and we got the halloumi with red peppers on a bed of salad. Well, where do I start. Everything had been cooked and re heated. The halloumi was cut into tiny pieces and stuck together and there wasn't even a quarter of a red pepper on the plate. The only thing edible on my plate of dinner was the chips and they were out of a bag! My partners mixed grill was dry and disgusting. It was very clear that everything had been reheated on the plates. We asked for ketchup and were given 2 tiny sachets.... you get more with a McDonald's happy meal.

I can safely say I will not be returning. What a waste of money and time.

Have used other pubs in the franchise and been ok! But this place needs a good clean ! It just looked grubby! Ordered the new summer grill, the bbq ribs were warm and didnt fall of the bone as they should, the chicken breast was warm on the outside! But boiling hot on the inside (microwaved??) Chips were firm and dry and coleslaw had a wierd taste! The only thing that tasted ok was the Cumberland sausage and salad. I wouldn't eat here again if i was starving and it was free.
