This intriguing object is thought to have been created by an antiques dealer in the early 19th-century from old and new parts. The bottom section is made up of the remains of a German Renaissance sculpture depicting the prophet Jonah and a whale, with the top part added later to create a salt cellar.

Owls are sometimes regarded as creatures of ill omen in Chinese culture. In 1973, a painting of a winking owl landed artist Huang Yongyu in trouble. Interpreted as a comment on Chairman Mao’s declining health, he was charged with blaspheming the socialist state. Eventually cleared, Huang protested by painting these two owls. The inscription mentions the artist ‘had no intention of making oblique comments through the depictions [of owls]’.

King #Ashurbanipal was one of Assyria’s greatest leaders, but his path to becoming ‘king of the world’ (as he described himself) was paved with family feuds and dramatic events of all kinds.
The statue on the right depicts Ashurbanipal, and on the left his older brother Shamash-shum-ukin. Their father – king Esarhaddon – chose Ashurbanipal to jump up the line of succession to become the next Assyrian leader, and Shamash-shum-ukin was made king of Babylon instead. At this tim...e, Babylon was part of the Assyrian empire and the older sibling soon made plans to overthrow his younger brother. When Ashurbanipal discovered the plot, he began a brutal two-year siege of Babylon which culminated in Shamash-shum-ukin dying in his burning palace.

Lindow Man was discovered #onthisday in 1984. His body was found preserved in a peat bog near Manchester in northwest England, with radiocarbon dating revealing he died between 2 BC and AD 119.
Conditions in the bog were perfect for preserving his body – cold, acidic and lacking in oxygen. This allowed his skin, hair and internal organs to be especially well preserved, which means we know more about him than any other prehistoric person found in Britain.
Scientists at the Museum discovered that he was about 25 when he died, around 170cm tall and weighed 60–65kg. He had filed fingernails and a trimmed beard, and ate unleavened bread before his death. This wax reconstruction shows what Lindow Man may have looked like http://ow.ly/vxOV30ldEaR

#August is named after the Roman emperor Augustus. It was previously known as Sextilis, meaning sixth month.
This finely detailed cameo of the emperor was made in the first century AD. Carved from sardonyx, the naturally occurring alternating colours of the rock are used to delineate different features in the portrait.
Find out how the other months got their names in our blog post: http://ow.ly/8zMe30lcFSC

This dazzling gold locket was made in the early 17th century for King James (VI of Scotland, I of England). The cover is set with diamonds that form the royal monogram ‘IR’ – the Latin ‘Iacobus Rex’ for King James. The locket is just under 7cm in length and contains a portrait by noted miniature painter Nicholas Hilliard. It's known as 'The Lyte Jewel' because James presented the locket to Thomas Lyte, who had supposedly traced the king’s ancestry back to the mythical founder of Britain. You can see this beautiful locket on display in the Museum’s Waddesdon gallery (Room 2a).

The spectacular #SuttonHoo treasure was unearthed #onthisday in 1939 – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in the UK! ✨
Uncovered in the east of England, the site was probably the burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and contained meticulously crafted metalwork and jewellery. The iconic helmet is extremely rare – only four complete examples are known from Anglo-Saxon England. Elaborately decorated, it contains a hidden motif that might not be obvious at... first glance. A bird or dragon is created by the central gilding – the moustache forms the tail, the nose becomes the body and the eyebrows the wings, with the head just above 🐉🐦

The mighty Assyrian empire began as the small city-state of Ashur in what is now the north-eastern region of Iraq. It first asserted control over a large area in the 14th century BC, with peaks and troughs in power until it reached its greatest extent in the 7th century BC under the rule of the last great Assyrian king – Ashurbanipal. The empire spanned from the shores of the eastern Mediterranean to the mountains of western Iran and was ruled from large cities – this artist’...s impression shows lavish royal palaces at Nineveh.
From libraries, letters and lion hunting to military campaigns and monuments, here’s everything you need to know about the Assyrians: http://ow.ly/gIZO30l2xLh

This piece of elaborate tableware appears to be a salt-cellar, but it has a secret history.
It was made in England in the 1570s – a time when acts of Roman Catholic worship were banned. Because of this, shrines or reliquaries had to appear as if they were something else to avoid suspicion and destruction. This salt-cellar is made from silver-gilt and is decorated with rubies and rock crystal that were taken from recycled religious objects. In Catholicism, rock crystal symbol...ised Christ’s purity and rubies evoked drops of his blood. It’s proof that people managed to save sacred items and continue to express their faith in defiance of the law.

Alexander the Great was born #onthisday in 356 BC.
This marble head was made in the 2nd or 1st century BC, well after his death – few portraits from his reign survive. It shows the leader looking youthful and clean-shaven, which was a revolutionary statement of style – all previous Greek rulers had been portrayed with beards. This royal fashion lasted for nearly 500 years!
Alexander ruled one of the largest empires in the world which spanned from Greece to northern India. This marble head was found in Alexandria, the city he founded in Egypt.

Degas conveyed the movement of ballet dancers with rapid oil sketches like this one made in the 1870s. He often went backstage to capture the strenuous training required to perform in Parisian ballet, and painted dancers in personal moments that audiences never got to see. Using thinned oil paint to make quick sketches, Degas could experiment with innovative compositions before producing a final painting.
The French artist was born #onthisday in 1834.

Rodin’s iconic sculptures ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Thinker’ are now regarded as masterpieces in their own right, but they both started out as small parts of a monumental composition – ‘The Gates of Hell’.
The whole sculpture stands around 6 metres tall and depicts a scene from Dante’s ‘Inferno’. It was originally commissioned in 1880 for a new decorative arts museum in Paris, but the museum was never built. Despite this, Rodin continued working on the creation for years, and pick...ed out individual sculptures to develop into full-scale artworks. You can see this highly detailed projection of ‘The Gates of Hell’ in our major exhibition.

‘Am I not a man and a brother?’
Plaques and medallions like this were circulated to promote the abolition movement in the late 18th century which aimed to end the slave trade. The design is based on the seal of The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, which was established in 1787. People used this image to show their support for the movement – small medallions were mounted as jewellery in rings, pendants and brooches. This plaque was designed to be hung on a wall and was made in the factory of noted abolitionist Josiah Wedgwood, who was born #onthisday in 1730.

‘Breaking [of plates] is forbidden by law’! 🍽️💥
British artist John Craxton moved to the Greek island of Crete in 1960. He found an old house and studio by the harbour in the town of Chania, and painted the people, landscapes and animals he encountered on the island. The rowdy harbourside tavernas allowed him to paint the sailors who would come and go from the port. Look closely and you can see some intriguing features in this work – the artist’s signature appears on the packet of cigarettes.

Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi was born #onthisday in 1593. One of the leading painters of the early 17th century, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the academy of arts in Florence. This is a symbolic portrait, depicting the source of her artistic brilliance – her hand – and the paintbrush as the tool of her trade. The words at the top describe this as ‘the worthy hand of the excellent and skilful Artemisia, gentlewoman of Rome’. The artist, Pierre Dumonstier, also wrote on the back that Gentileschi’s works were ‘marvels that send the most judicious eyes into raptures’. http://ow.ly/tUUe30kPyta

On every occasion that I visit the museum I spend so much time exploring the Egypt and Sudan galleries I have very little time for anything else.

On this visit I avoided these rooms and took the time to absorb the rest. I must say that I was in awe of the workmanship that must have gone into making the great torc, so often seen on documentaries, to see it up close was a fantastic opportunity.

So many schools visiting on the day which is great. It is good to see children of mixed ages being introduced to heritage and learning that museums are not about whispering and tip toeing around but are places where you can engage with history and express it's effect.

Keep up the good work BM

Get the damned lifts fixed! As someone in a wheelchair, this was an incredibly frustrating experience, including getting trapped on both the way up and the way down in the glass lift to get into the building!
