"Rome’s enmity was partly a reaction to the doctor’s own fierce hostility to religion, including his infamous denigration of faith in God as an infantile father projection. To Catholics and other believers, Freudianism—the caricatured version of it that they saw, anyway—epitomized the scientific materialism that elevated the unconscious over conscience, compulsion over free will, and sex obsession over transcendental longing. Even into the nineteen-sixties, lay Catholics were discouraged, and clergy were forbidden, from undergoing psychoanalysis." https://www.newyorker.com/…/the-popes-s hrink-and-catholicis…

Are you interested in psychoanalytic and Jungian ideas? Or perhaps you are considering intensive psychotherapy training but you are not quite sure if it's right for you? Our introductory Psychotherapy Today course is just for you! But what makes it stand out from other introductory courses out there? It doesn't focus on one particular approach only - it combines both psychoanalytic and Jungian thinking. It gives you flexibility - the seminars are only once a month so you don't need to be based in London to attend. Also, every student is allocated a mentor who will support them in their studies. Find out more about the course here: http://www.britishpsychotherapyfoundation .org.uk/…/psychoth…

"When we think of silence, because we yearn for it perhaps, or because we’re scared of it — or both — we’re forced to recognise that what we’re talking about is actually a mental state, a question of consciousness. Though the external world no doubt exists, our perception of it is always very much our perception, and tells us as much about ourselves as it does about the world. There are times when a noise out there is truly irritating and has us yearning for peace." https://aeon.co/…/is-the-sound-of-silen ce-the-end-of-the-se…

A series of six Saturday workshops exploring dream and dream interpretation through the Jungian lens will run in Oxford from January 2019. The aim is to develop and deepen our conversation with dreams and dream symbolism, widening our understanding of collective and personal unconscious processes, both inside and outside the consulting room Find out more: http://www.britishpsychotherapyfoundation .org.uk/…/jungian-…

"Psychoanalysis went underground in communist Russia - books were hidden, sessions held in secret. In St Petersburg, Chris Ledgard meets Catherine Crowther and Jan Wiener. The two therapists, trained at the Society of Analytical Psychology in London, are helping to re-introduce Jungian analysis to Russian society. Their new Russian colleagues discuss inter-generational clashes, conflicting ideas about the individual in society, and how the modern Russian mind deals with the shadows of the past." https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01mts9g

At our next event in Oxford in November, Margaret Rustin will discuss how time-limited psychoanalytic psychotherapy can contribute to understanding and treating the overwhelming numbers of seriously depressed young people in need of help.
The recent large Randomised Control Trial, known as the IMPACT study, demonstrated that short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy was effective for adolescents with major depression, and that it was as effective as CBT. This is the first time child psychotherapy has been included in an RCT and it is hoped that this will lead to a change in the NICE guidelines, which are just being reviewed.

Three terms of 8-week seminars will be offered. It is possible to join for one, two or three terms. The group will meet on Monday evenings at 7.00pm – 8.30pm. The first term runs from September to November 2018.

A series of five seminars focusing on the practical application of Wilfred Bion's ideas. Bion’s writing can at times be difficult and arcane. The aim of the seminars will be to clarify his ideas and ground them in the everyday realities of the clinical situation from which they arose.

"Freud, hoping to keep a grip on the emerging field of study, brought together six prominent students and created a “Secret Committee” to propagate and defend his work against Jungian psychoanalysis. To seal the deal, Freud gifted each committee member a signet ring with a Greek or Roman god from antiquity taken from his collection. He later gifted other rings to friends and students, in total handing out about 20 of the signets during his life." https://www.smithsonianmag.com/…/exhibi t-reveals-rings-fre…/

This course is aimed at service supervisors who wish to enhance their supervisory skills in the ever complex NHS environment. It is an ACP requirement for child psychotherapists who act as service supervisors to undertake training on the many aspects of this complex role. Supervision skills are also seen as a crucial addition to professional and managerial development in NHS services so this will be a valuable addition to CPD.
The group will meet monthly on Fridays 12.30pm - ...3.00pm between October 2018 and July 2019.

"The projection of values onto a national figure parallels how we project values and qualities onto the most important and guiding presences in our personal lives, our own mothers and fathers. What is projected or placed onto another individual by our unconscious reflects the values of our specific time and place as well as our psychology." http://dalemkushner.com/…/fathers-heroe s-villains-and-our-…/

This reading group aims to carry out a systematic reading of C.G. Jung's original works in monthly facilitated discussions over 10 months and explore their significance in academic and clinical contexts. The reading group is open to those with a shared interest in reading Jung's works. Current participants include clinicians as well as graduates with academic backgrounds. Prior knowledge of subjects is not assumed, but the ability to openly engage with the reading material is an essential part of the group's discussions.
