Men dominate commercial kitchens, going as far to claim us ladies are too weak to lift pots, too emotional to handle the heat in the kitchen 🙄
... I love the fellas (trust me I do 😉) and sometimes they’re a great help in my kitchen (oh hey @saiffiedaffie and MB) but it’s the ladies I’m passionate about propping up and empowering🙋🏽‍♀️training women and giving them the confidence to work in any workplace is an integral part of how I run Empress Market 👑

Well that’s all folks 🙋🏽‍♀️Empress Market is closed for A/W19💖 no more Bun Kababs in London folks 🍔 my little Shehzadi has grown up so much as I learnt how to let her thrive • 👑 • Thank you to my amazing Empress crew & to those special friends I’ve made along the way, I couldn’t have done it without you 💕... • @empressmarket returns to London in January 2020 with special events 👸🏽 Bun Kabab will be back at @pitchstratford March 2020, watch this space 🙋🏽‍♀️ • In the meantime I’ll keep ya updated on my travel/food shenanigans as I chase the winter sun☀️

Sev heaven💗chickpea flour batter passed through a sieve, fried to make crunchy squiggles (official name!) and tossed in spices 🥰 In the UK we like to call this Bombay Mix but I’m pretty sure no one calls it that in Bombay! These moreish bits of joy have different names across South Asia and in my home my mum calls it “please take the bowl away from me otherwise I’ll eat it all” 🙌🏽 At Empress Market the spicy sev adds a nice crunch in Bun Kababs, a nice contrast to the smooth texture of the shami kabab 👩🏽‍🍳it’s my little touch 😉

The experience of eating Karachi original Bun Kabab’s is so special 🍔 can’t get enough!

EMPRESS MARKET 👑what a pleasure visiting my Shehzadi’s namesake, the OG Empress Market 👸🏽 the grounds before this Victorian building have been cleared in a mission of gentrifying the area, displacing small businesses and vendors without notice. The piles of rubble create an impression of ruins while the market courtyard continues its trade of local and “paani walay jahaz” wares. Speaking to the traders, they did not seem too excited about these plans with rumours of convertin...g the building into a high end shopping area or museum harking back to Karachi’s bloody colonial history, looming over their heads. Bouji perspectives of Karachi elite, with their colonial hangover, are relieved the area is changing, with the “encroachment of illegal” market vendors being cleared out. On the other hand, it’s important to appreciate Empress Market as a transit junction, where the country’s travellers congregate with their goods. My heart goes out to all the small business owners uprooted from their place of trade. Trust me, as a small business owner, I know how it feels to be knocked around by the big city 💪🏽
